The HRSA Nursing Scholarship

Updated:   Published

The HRSA nursing scholarship is available now. I just submitted my application although I'm probably a long shot.

How to Apply for a Scholarship

If you're interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, you may be eligible for a scholarship through the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The HRSA Scholarship Program is designed to support students in various healthcare disciplines who are committed to serving underserved communities and helping to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in those areas.

HRSA offer scholarships to help pay for health professions' education.

All Scholarship awardees will provide a one-year service commitment for each year of scholarship support received.

The application cycle typically opens in late Winter or early Spring and closes in late Spring or early Summer, so be sure to check the website regularly for updates.

Scholarship requirements:

To be eligible for the HRSA Scholarship, you must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited program that leads to a degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • Nursing (including RN, ADN, BSN, and graduate-level nursing programs)
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Certified Nurse-Midwife

You must also be a U.S. citizen, a national, or permanent resident.

Have no federal judgment liens and service commitment.

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for scholarship through the HRSA's online application system.

Scholarship award covers:

  • Tuition and Eligible Fees
  • A monthly stipend for living expenses
  • An annual other reasonable costs payment

If you have any questions about the program or the application process, the HRSA offers resources and support to help guide you through the process. Don't miss out on the opportunity to receive financial assistance while pursuing your dream of a career in healthcare and serving those in need.

Okay I have a question--If we are awarded the scholarship does our grant have to pay for our tuition first...or can HRSA pay for all of tuition and our grant be refunded to us??

Depends on the grant and under what terms it can be used. Some are specifically only for tuition, in which case it's up to you and the school whether you refuse the grant and let HRSA pay for everything... some can be used for tuition & other expenses, in which case the school can bill HRSA for the entire amount of your tuition and refund the grant money to you.

That just sounds too good to be true! I'm pretty sure they will subtract any grant, scholarships from tuition and bill the rest to HRSA. Unless you got a scholarship that says it does not have to be used directly for tuition. If you go back to the previous post, someone that received this scholarship last year posted something about it.

It's true, to a degree. I suspect because the Pell grant is federal and is considered the "basis" of financial aid (i.e. it's the first thing you're awarded, then loans) that you may have to forfeit it if you're awarded the HRSA scholarship as it's for tuition only. But I could be wrong - they don't specify on the student financial aid gov site what the Pell is restricted to.

I'd be curious to find out what the answer is. This is my second degree so I'm ineligible for Pell, but I wonder if you could actually get it refunded!

Yeah I was just curious. I didn't think I could get refunded, but I thought I read somewhere that the Pell could be used for other educational expenses thats why I was wondering.

Thats true. I was reading about it online. I read in previous post that it is subtracted. I keep bothering my financial aid department about it and they won't tell me anything really. I guess we will have to wait and see.

When I went to community college, the pell grant went directly to me! I sure hope it isn't subtracted from tuition as well.

My mine went directly towards me, but first paid tuition just because I wasn't getting loans. I guess I can email my financial aid guy and see what he tells me...I will let ya'll know.

Hmm I don't know them. Are they going to be in 200 & 214 in the fall? Thats what I will be in. Did your cousin just have a baby recently? BTW congrats on getting the emails! I checked my spam and NOTHING... Oh well.:sniff:

Yeah, keep me posted. I would love to know. Wouldn't that be awesome if we got the HRSA scholarship and got to keep the PELL grant! :yeah:

I'm not sure about the how the Pell works either, but in the past, Pell always gave me whatever I had left in a check. So who knows. I may pay a visit into financial aid and see what they say, once I get the award letter, IF I get it. If anyone happens to find out the answer, please post it here.

Yeah. I am trying to plan the paying things off saving for a house. I graduate in April and would like to be out of my parent's house by next Dec...more money I can save the better off I will be :-)
