The Guys Club: Guy Students Come on In!

Nursing Students Male Students

Published

Hi All!

I'm a crazy father of 2 ex-premed who just recently turned down Northwestern to go into a RN program.

I already have an Associate in Science, but I'll be getting another ADN and then go to a 4 yr school.

When I went to an info session about the RN program ill be trying to get into, out of like 70 ppl only 5 were guys.

So I want to know are there any men out there?

Hey whats up, male nursing student, want to thank my parents for letting me live at home rent free so that i can pay for classes without any loans. i'm a senior in an SPN program in NH. Nursing is my way of making a difference in the world. I hope i can raise up to the challange.

Welcome killer kixx..

And twarlik, thanks man.

I was saying it crazy IMO to refer to men as nightengales but to each his own.

And btw if you want to attack me then you'll have to do better than that.. you just made yourself look like a big stupid ass!

Specializes in CICu, ICU, med-surg.

No prob. He sent me a nasty pm. Welcome to my ignore list!

Hello everyone

I have been receiving the All Nurses email bulletin for a while now, and saw a link for "guy nurses", so I thought what the hell I'll check it out. Well I've registered, and here I am.

I'm a second year student (from a total of 3 years) doing my Bachelor of Nursing (Degree), in Australia. Probably differs to the equivalent in the USA or elsewhere.

I'm 31 ( ), and I was one of the ones that changed careers, cos of a disatisfaction with previous lines of work.

Just had my first Acute & Chronic ward placement (out in the hospital) today, so it's a perfect day, to sign up, hence my nick :)

I hope to contribute to this forum when I can, as I see there are hundreds of threads to see.

Cheers!

Welcome A&C!

Love to hear about your experiences in the future

Welcome, Acute and Chronic. Good to hear from the Oz. Have thought long and hard about moving to the land down under. What;s it like practicing nursing in Australia?

Seen a lot of comment obout males in nursing here. I finished BSN in 1984 and had 10 guys in my class - very unusual back then. We had a blast, and I do not think the professors quite knew what to do with us. Most of us were from other careers or the military. Even though I went on to law school after a few years, I still practice nursing casual pool in the PACU. I have never regretted getting my BSN, and think nursing is one of the hottest tickets now - a great career with great flexibility and real job satisfaction. salaries are getting better. Working with mostly women can be a challenge sometimes and for what its worth, I think it is best to learn early on when it is best to retreat and become invisible. I had sisters, so I don't find it that difficult. my wife is a nurse too, which helps. It helps if you basicly like women and do not compete with them in the manner they do among themselves. Keep a sense of humor.

Good luck to all of you in school. It ain't always reality in that setting, but you got to play the game to graduate. Later.

Great post douglas. Hopefully we can learn something from you guys ;)

I'm starting the program at Florida State Univ. on the 25th. I have no idea how many other guys are in the program. Hoping I'm not the only one...

Take care all!

Now I feel like the odd one out. Welcome guys the more the merrier and a hearty welcome to the profession of nursing. I don't know if you are aware of it but the Univ of Miami has an M.D. to R.N. degree program. Some are foreign students who wanted to be nurses but their heritage said they had to be docs. FSU wrong school Uof F made a higher partying school over FSU. GATORS rule!!!!!

Good luck guys in your studies and if any of you have any questions you can find our personal emails and email or ask the board about it.

Good to see all these guys here

anyway, today I had a skills assesment test. It's manditory for my nursing school, but doesn't effect your grades or placement.

I finished the test, and passed it all GREAT except for the part of the test which deals with understanding what you read. I scored 80.7 out of 100.

The instructor actually asked me if I had a learning disability! wow! I graduated highschool being on the honour roll 3 times, had an 80+ average including Math A B and C 30, Calculus, Physics, English A and B 30, psychology, Law, Chemistry, Biology, all with over 80 averages, and she thinks I have a learning disability!

ahhh i was so mad! I hope she wasn't trying to discourage me from starting the course just because I'm a guy....

I think I'm reading too much into this, but it still made me feel stupid.

DMR1, blow it off because as an instructor she should have said nothing. Do you have an idea why you scored what you did? If so see if you can get some ideas from former teachers. Maybe a speed reading course as that will certainly come in handy with all the work you will have to read.

When my brother was in the 1st grade he had a teacher who taught on Saturdays students who were gifted. They only went to school the one day a week. Well, my brother did have a learning problem and was not going to be an academic genius. At the end of the first grade she was planning on keeping him back. The problem was her perception of his work not the overall picture. She was constantly making comparisons. Well, he changed schools and went on to graduate from a good high school and is working at what he wants to as well as working on vehicles on the weekend.

There will be others in your life that will do this. We have all had it happen one time or another so just let it go as your an adult and she was not being a professional nurse or instructor.

My grandmother was from Nova Scotia just outside Halifax. I have been their several times and love it. I don't think I will be able to go back again. Look up my personal email and you can write me if you need help with classes or rude instructors. I have 20 years + behind me so I have learned a few tricks as many of u s have.

I'm 18 and Im starting the NEPS program in a few weeks (Nursing Education program of Saskatchewan)

I'm taking 4 year course, then working in the ER or as a Perioperative RN for a few years, then I plan to continue my education with a little experience behind me and become a Nurse Practitioner :)

I'm glad to see so many guys on this board. I am totally FREAKED out that I will be alone in my nursing classes (we have 250 seats, only 12 are guys) and I don't want to sit by myself everyday because I don't want to talk about hair or nails.

Hopefully I'll meet some girls who watch CFL lol. I'm sure there are going to be plenty of people in the my classes that I'll get along with.

Good luck to everyone.

What about the hockey season. Go Bruins and not the ones from California but Boston. I am proud you guys are taking on a new challenge and your varied experiences you have had will prepare you for working with staff members who are already in place as well as give some administrative work in the event you take that route.

Buy the way we didn't talk about nails or hair but about the next days clinical or a test that had just passed or was coming up. I think one of the most beautiful signs I have seen is a male nurse holding a premie in one hand and being so gentle. Male nurses should not have to worry about that. Guys before doing a procedure on a female as first and give her the option. Sometims if you have chronic patients and they get to know you they still prefer a female nurse particularly the older ones. This also protects yourself from any problems.

Also, find out your schoools liability coverage as well as the institution you will be doing clinicals in. My advice is even though you are a student you can still be pulled in to legal action. You will be working based on your clinical instructor's license many times but as soon as a facility can that will disenfranchise a student or employee so that they are carrying less of the load. is realitively cheap but good to have. Even as you begin practice it is always good to carry your own policy and don't tell anyone you have it or the limits on it. If a client doesn't know then there is less chance of a problem. Once someone knows there are dollar signs the red flags go up. As they say cover your butts as we do.

Enabled 20 years and holding.

Hey guys. I just graduated from an ADN. Some of the best students that I know will make the best nurses were the guys in my class. I am so glad to see more and more male students take up nursing.

Kim--another female

Kim congrats on completing your degree and getting your RN. It is not an easy task with all the commitments of the day. A hearty and warm welcome to you KIM RN

If you plan on getting your BSN and can arrange it begin taking at least one class a semester and then you will have it complete and not be pressured like you are for the ADN. The last two years of the BSN are nowhere near as difficult and I am almost 50 and should graduate in December and thinking Master's
