SO.... I wrote awhile back about leaving the hospital after being hired for a tele position and then being put on a med/surg floor with a very confidence crushing preceptor. (Not bashing Med/Surg, those nurses are awesome!) I had luckily gotten out of my signed work contract and went to work in an internal practice.
NOW..... it has been one month and I am SOO bored. I am acting as a medical assistant (which was what I did prior to nursing school). A funny chain events have transpired in the past few days, and I REALLY feel like something is pushing me back.....back to the hospital.
Looks like I am FINALLY getting my chance to work on a tele unit :)! And, yes, it is with a different hospital. I am so excited that I will get to work with that independence and knowledge that I worked so hard for in school. I will actually get to assess my patients again, and be there for them! I never thought I would actually MISS the hospital.
My message is....... the grass is not always greener on the other side. I know I am going to have days where I want to rip my hair out and cry from frustration..... but when you don't have that ( along with the other wonderful feelings that are nursing specific ) you really start to miss it, and you start to miss the fulfillment that comes from being in a setting, such as the hospital. I am so excited to go back in my area of passion ( I think I will be a cardiac junkie for life). All of us new nurses have to realize that it is not going to be easy, it's going to be hard as hell! BUT, just wait.... in a few years, you might be a preceptor looking at your precepte crying from frustration and you will be able to tell them that one day, it will be ok.
Give it a fair try before leaving. A job worth having is not going to be easy, in any field. SO don't give up on yourself. Find something each day that boosts your confidence, and one "happy" thing about the day, and take it one shift at time..... That's what I plan to do :)!!!!!

Thanks so much for sharing your experience. Hopefully, others will benefit from it but most of us have to learn from our own mistakes.
