I heard that they are now going to train nurses to do some surgery in the UK. Anyone else heard of that? Kind of excites me because I would love to go back to the UK but the pay with 3 kids is not very exciting And I would love to have an advanced nursing role. I am planning on getting my MSN in the US (either midwife, nurse practioner or nurse anesthetist. Depends on the day. I am being open until I actually get through nursing school).
So do you think the advanced nursing role is going to be expanding rapidly to meet the needs of patients in light of the overall shortage of medical practioners in all fields?

the role of the RN is going through some big changes at the moment with more emphasis in community care. I believe there are some nurses trained for minor surgery but the question arises to whether they are adequately covered in insurance and whether the nmc recognises that role as an extended role. The demand for NP's in the community has increased dramatically and with a bit of luck will soon have proper recognition with the nmc
Are you coming to Phoenix (saw the sign under your name)? Where do you find the job postings for NP's in the UK? Although I am not at that point yet I do like to look at the jobs available. Although, midwifery is my first love the liability scares me. My second choices would be acute care NP or trauma. How are the jobs over there for those. Nurse anesthetists (which I don't believe you have in the UK yet) is next on my list. It would probably be right behind mw except for the lack of international opportunities.

The are already Nurses performing both minor surgery and performing the role of first assistant.
We also have nurse doing gastroscopies with thier own lists.
Not in every hospital but I work in a medium sized District General Hospital and if it happing here, the major teaching hospital should be doing it.

Good luck. Government officials are so slow. Thanks for the info. What made you decide on Phoenix?

I'm a nurse practitioner in general practice. The NMC is hopefully going to regulate advanced practice some time next year. for info on NP's here- try the RCN web site or the UK nurse pratitioener web site. The pay is not as great as it should be!!

I made contact with a recruiter, we thought that this would be the better option than signing on with an agency who couldn't promise a placement where we wanted. Plus we had a look at the jobs that might be available for my husband who is a computer programmer. We visited in march and loved what we saw.
