The best nursing shoes?

Nurses General Nursing

Hello everyone!

I'll be starting nursing school in January (yay!!), and I am looking into buying a pair of athletic shoes for school. The school requires that your shoes be leather, and either white or black. I usually wear Nike's for just everyday shoes, but if I wear them for too long, they make my feet hurt, so I definitely need different shoes that have more arch support. I am just curious about everyone's favorite brand of shoes for work!

Any and all advice is welcome

I was working surgery back in 1986 and was standing for hours on end. I asked a podiatrist I was scrubbed in with what he thought were the best shoes were and he said New Balance.

Now, New Balance then weren't as ubiquitous as they are now, but I still wear them and buy what I believe are the best at about $150 a pair. I also put Birkenstock inserts into every pair of shoes I own. For working a lot on my feet a lot for over 30 years, my shoe system has served me well.

Congratulations and good luck in nursing school, lauren!

I'm with Davey---New Balance is the shoe for me. I can try on almost any pair and they fit like they were custom-made for me. I usually buy the moderately priced shoes now, but when I was nursing I bought the top of the line because they didn't wear out as quickly. I was very hard on regular shoes because I spent my entire nursing career weighing over 300 lbs., and had to replace them every 4-6 months. So I'd buy two pairs of the expensive NB running shoes and alternate them every other shift, and they'd last me at least 9 months.

I've been out of nursing for over 4 years now, and I still wear NBs nearly every day. I have a couple pairs of Nikes but don't like them as much.
