That scary student has been reported again...

Nursing Students General Students

Published

I know some thought I was wrong in reporting him but I did and my instructor was glad I did. This past weekend he was paired with yet another student and things didn't go well at all.

I don't know all the details but I left at 2:00, the partner left at 2:30 and the scary student left after 3:00. The partner had to stay behind because of the other student even though we all left at 2:00.

Again this guy didn't do any assessments, he had issues with meds, he was forceful with the patient, he didn't know how to document and from what I gather that's just the basics. There's a girl in our group who had to deal with him the previous year and she said nothing has changed. These 2 are new to our class...he apparently failed a nursing class and she screwed up math which from what I gather last year was really rough. So they are with us now.

So yesterday the student who had to deal with the scary one went to speak with the instructor and had a very nice conversation. He said that she clearly wanted to hear what his thoughts were. It sounds like she made a comment a little earlier that was hinting that he should talk to her about any issues. I know she knows there are issues and I think she needs to hear it from us as well so they can do something. Our mid term clinical evals are coming out. I bet he's not getting a satisfactory.

The student who had him first told me she regrets not reporting him and may go have a conversation with the instructor.

It's just a bad situation. I'm sure he's a nice guy but he's a danger on the floor.

Heck she instructor had to spend most of her time with him this past weekend...which honestly is not fair to the other students. She really can't leave him for very long and she certainly can't trust him with meds.

So it continues and it's very clear the instructor wants and expects us to report to her serious issues like this. I wouldn't work with a nurse like him and turn my head so I can't do it as a student. In fact my instructor made a comment that pretty much suggested that she would be annoyed if we ignored these things.

So there's the update on that. For those who thought it was wrong to report...that's your choice, your opinion. I did what I had to do and based on the reaction of the instructor and the report being made by another student...I know I did the right thing. Nursing school isn't just about me...

I'm sorry that post was not meant for you, it was meant for those people who said that they would not report.

sah, "as a nursing student i have as much responsibility as anyone else on that floor. [color=#990000]~ no you don't ~ i am worried about other students. i worry about those who i know are having a tough time and are wonderful people, i worry about the girl with a problem with her ankle because she's worried, i worry about another girl who had some surgeries and has a lot of make up time to do, i worry about another guy in class because his health could be better...i worry about them because i care. i worry about a student who i feel is a danger because i care." [color=#990000]~ that all sounds very nice. however, from what you have demonstrated here you intentions are not so golden as you make them sound. xxx

sah, "i reported the student. i was asked about what was going on because i was obvious bothered by the events. the people who asked were my friends." [color=#990000]~ that is not 'reporting' . reporting would have been to the instructor rather than you fellow students

sah, "again...i thought this board was for support, a sounding board and not always completely formal. apparently this isn't a friendly board to just discuss nursing school things in general. this board is apparently very formal and strict topic. i didn't realize it. i simply wrote about it to get it off my chest, to share, to relieve the stress of a horrible day. i won't make that mistake again. i will stick to non personal, non friendly posts only."

[color=#990000]sah. what others have tried to express to you (that you refuse to see) is that you are a student. you are not yet a nurse, a staff member of the hospital, or the other students advisor. yes. you have some (very little really) responsibility at clinical but only for your own actions or for reporting gross safety issues. and those would actually need to be reported to the hospital don as well with a varience filed. that type of problem is not what you have listed about this other student. if i remember correctly you were very upset because he disagreed with you on how to measure the urine when the bag was drained. not life threatening. you also felt he should have had his glasses on all the time rather then let them hang around his neck. he pulled up the wrong dose of a medication that the instructor caught. xxxx that's why you guys are still students! even though this may come as a blow to your ego, you do not yet have the knowledge base to judge your fellow students. instructors have master's degrees in nursing. you have no degree of any kind in nursing yet. trust me, if the instructor doesn't see everything and he is truly as unsafe as you feel he is then the nclex will get him anyway.

xxxx ..xxxx ..xxxxx if you have a true vent that really does involve a stressful frustration you want to get off your chest... great! let us build your moral back up and keep you going so you can get through nursing school...xxxx... xxxx... need advise about an assignment or nursing school in general. wonderful. we're there 100%. need to understand a certain topic just a bit better or want something explained in a different way for you? we love to help with that too! bad day of clinical (because it was your bad day at clinical) come and let us help you look at it in a different light to relieve some of the stress that goes with the territory. no problem!
