I actually received a phone call from a HR person to let me know that I would not be considered for the position. She explained the reasons - mostly too many applicants for not enough positions - and thanked me for applying. She also stated that she called because she didnt want me to wait for a positive reply when none was coming.

I thanked her for taking the time to call me. Most times you don't even get an email....:twocents:

It is hard to keep getting rejection emails/post cards in the mail (or phone calls!) I have never heard of someone calling you to tell you that you didn't get a job? I would also investigate this. I am trying to accept that something will work out eventually and that 'good things come to those who wait.'

Sounds to me like she called you from her home number because she wanted to spare you a holiday ruined by anxiety. Most people actually would rather know the decision, even if the news isn't good. If that is the case, your perception of what the call really was for and what you feel she was attempting to convey may be off center.

Those phone calls to tell you you won't be getting a job being a way to twist the knife? Actually it is the opposite. They're making a call they don't really need to so you can get on with your life. Most places you don't hear squat-- and you go through the process of agonizing about whether your application/interview was sucked into a black hole or do the gears just turn really slowly? I would really prefer knowing, and a delay won't change the outcome.
