Obtaining a texas license from out of state

U.S.A. Texas

Published

How long does it take to get a Texas RN license? It not in a compact state? When should one start and how many months could it potentially take? I am in a position where i have a applied for a position, but they have not been able to give me specifics how long it takes to get a license in the state and they have a strict deadline. However, don't necessarily know if I want to apply for the license unless i know I got the job. Thanks!

Texas IS a compact state. The Texas BON should be able to answer your other questions.

If you live in a compact state, you have to apply for your initial license in your state of residence IF and only IF you live in a compact state. The license from your home state is valid in the state of Texas, and youll just have to transfer your license to Texas within 90 days of moving there.

If your state of residence is not a compact state then you can apply directly to Texas and it takes a very similar amount of time as other states. (aka it does not take an extreme amount of time like California)

If you aren't sure about moving to texas, it is most likely a safe bet to get a license in your home state and transfer it when you get a job.

I do not live in a compact state that I am aware of. So I would apply on the Texas website for endorsement, is this correct?

This is helpful! Thank you!
