Houston job market & pay for experienced nurses

U.S.A. Texas

Published

We will likely be moving to Houston late 2016/ early 2017. What is the job market like for experienced critical care nurses? Specialties include Surgical, Neuro and Trauma ICU and Step-down units. What base pay should I expect for 3 years experience in these specialties? What are the best hospitals and which (if any) have nursing unions?

Thanks in advance!

Hello, I don't live in Houston but there are no unions here in Texas for nurses. I've heard that Houston pays more. If you read some old posts, you'll find some that state what the pay is in Houston.

Thanks for the quick response! I did search the older posts and did not see any 2016 salary info for Houston

Depending on which hospital system probably $30-34/hr would be a quick guess.

Actually, there is ONE unionized facility in Houston.... NNOC has been in the Cypress Fairbanks hospital since 2010. NNOC actually has 'won' a few RGV & El Paso facilities as well, but I don't know whether those efforts were sustained.

If you want to improve your job search results, it would be a good idea to become certified (CEN &/or TCRN). According to my HR colleagues, Houston nursing salaries are the highest in Texas right now - driven by supply & demand.

I've heard good things about memorial hermann. they do recruitment events in Chicago, nyc and boston a few times a year. good luck!

Depending on hospital you are with but in general they are hiring everywhere, the good hospital systems are Methodist and memorial hermann
