Texas Nurses Working in Another State

Published

Are there any nurses here from Texas working in another state, specifically California?

I recently got approved for my license transfer to Cali, and I was wondering what the  requirements to keep my Texas license active are, when I'm working elsewhere (for at least 4 years, not a travel nurse, military affiliated).

I completed my CEUs, but the more I read on the Texas BON website about policies on active status and working outside of the state, the more confused I get, and the board is notoriously overwhelmed right now and I wouldn't be able to get specific answers.

They mention repeating courses and fees, but I'm not sure I'm reading all that correctly.

Thank you!

I'm from Texas and I work in California. I can't imagine why you'd want to keep your Texas license if you're going to be gone for four plus years, though. Just let it go, and apply in Texas when (and if) you go back.

You cannot "transfer" a license, by the way ...you can apply by endorsement, but you'll keep the license you previously had until it expires.

I would just love to have the option open, if all it takes is keeping up with my CEUs. And yes you are right, it is by endorsement.

Thank you for the input!

When I got my Florida license and talked with the Texas BON about the fact that I didn't know how long I'd be here they suggested putting my license on "inactive" status.  I don't have to do anything special and I'm assuming that it'll be easier to reactivate than to apply all over again.  Not sure of that but I figured if they suggested it why not?  And since that's the only license number I've ever been able to memorize it would be nice to have the same number again ?

Interesting! I've seen some info on an 'inactive' status so I'll look into it more. Before recently I didn't even know that was an option.

Thank you!
