Texas License, out of state applicant

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hello,

I need clarification. I will be graduating from an accredited program In idaho. I will be moving to Texas 15 days after graduation. What is the process for applying to take the NCLEX in Texas, to be licensed in Texas?

Looking at the Texas BON website, it shows that I need to have a Texas DL, take the NJE, apply for finger printing/background check and then take the NCLEX. Can I start this process now? Should I register with pearson vue to take the NCLEX in Texas now?

I have a residence in texas now, however I am a Washington resident currently. So will I have to wait to start this whole process until I get to Texas? I can not take the NCLEX in Idaho for Idaho due to my living situation (my lease etc).

What is the best way for me to proceed? I dont want this to be a 6 month ordeal after graduation.

Thanks.

The only time that residency affects where you can apply for licensure is if you are a legal resident of one compact state and are applying for licensure in another compact state, as in this situation you must apply for licensure in your home state and then apply for licensure by endorsement when you move. For example, if you were a resident of Idaho you would have to apply for licensure in Idaho and then apply for licensure by endorsement in Texas after you relocated. As residency is a requirement for a compact license, I suspect that this was the reference to having a Texas driver's license you are referring to.

If you know for a fact that you will be moving to Texas, then it would make sense for you to apply there this would be the fastest and least expensive route.

So because I am a legal resident of Washington, a non compact state I would be able to apply for a Texas License with out needing to prove I am a Texas resident?

Exactly.

I am really confused. I went to the Texas-BON and hit apply (under examination) and it asks for my Texas DL.... Thank you guys for the comments. I seem to need to search harder.

Ok! I think I have rectified my misstep in reading the requirements. Listed below is what is required to fill out the application:

[h=3]Guidelines & Eligibility[/h]In order to apply for an initial Texas Nursing License by Examination Online you must provide the following information and/or meet the following requirements:

  • Applicants must have a valid US Social Security Number.
  • Applicants must meet educational requirements outlined in the Board Rules. (See the Eligibility Page for more information.)
  • Applicants must not have any eligibility issues. (See the Eligibility Page for more information.)
  • Applicants must not claim a Compact Primary State of Residence or Compact Home State, other than Texas, as defined by the Nursing Licensure Compact. (See the Eligibility Page for more information.)
  • This must be your first application for licensure by examination in Texas for the applied licensure type.
  • Applicants are requested to provide their corresponding basic nursing education school code. Please see the Eligibility Page for the appropriate code.
  • The application will request information from your Texas Driver License or Texas Identification Card. Please have this card handy, if applicable.

Examination candidates, who are not able to use this online application, may download an Application for Licensure by Examination from our website (http://www.bon.texas.gov/).

Since I am a Washington resident I can fill out the application with my Washington Info. And do not need to answer the driver license question, correct? And I should fill out this application soon correct? I have a residence in Texas (my in laws, should I use this address?)

Thanks!

No you don't use the TX address that is not yours. Your address is WA. You cannot apply online as a non resident per what you posted above you must use a paper application
