hematology (hemato + ology)

pathology (patho + ology)

laparotomy (laparo + otomy)

cystoscopy (cysto + scopy)

exocrine (exo + crine)

electrocardiogram (electro + cardio + gram)

you may know the definitions, but do you know the rules of combining?

do you have a medical dictionary? every single one of these word roots, suffixes and prefix with the exception of "-crine" are in a section of the appendix of my 10 year old copy of taber's cyclopedic medical dictionary, 18th edition, published in 1997 by f.a. davis company. each of the above word roots and suffixes is also an entry in the main section of the dictionary as well.

the only one you're going to have trouble with is "-crine". it comes from the greek krinein which means to secrete. combined with the prefix, exo-, which means outside, exocrine literally means "to excrete outside (a duct)".
