Hey. i am a travel nurse who currently holds a compact license. i applied for a cali license a couple weeks ago ( mid may) and requested a temp license because i know there is a issue on my background. i sent alot of documentation, but know it will prob take an additional amount of time. i am hoping to get an assignment omewhere around the begining to mid august. My question is does anyone know if they will go ahead and issue a temp license while waiting to issue the perm in the time frame i am hoping for or am i going to have to wait and wait on everything?

I would send in all the case documents, tons of character references and reference letters, an explanation of events. They may process everything and then ask for more paperwork like case records sent directly from the courthouse in the county it happened. Wow was that a pain. California also lost my transcripts that my school sent, either that or the school never sent them as I paid for. But anyways, I have found that with the extra issue to deal with, processing takes a long time. I would suggest calling them and waiting however long it takes to figure out how far along they are In the process. Had I not called Massachusetts and California, there's no telling how Long I would have waited to find out they were missing some documents. Good luck!

Did you do live scan or fingerprint cards?

i appreciate the feedback. i went back over the application and maybe im being a dumb blond but i do not see where it says if you have a background issue they will not issue a temp. It says if you have a current active clear license in another state you are elegible. Am i missing that paragraph somewhere?
i had to fo a hard scan fingerprint. Live in colorado and dont believe we have livescan available. I do have access to the name and number of the endorsement specialist at he california board. i was told that i could wzit a couple weeks and contact him directly, but not sure i should do that yet. i guess i was hoping that if you are honest, show that you are a good nurse, ect that they would practice. I want to do my best to remain optomistic.

hey nurseries, i just wanted to check and make sure that even though it did take you an extended time and extra work to get your 2 out of state licenses, you did finally recieve them right? So in the end you were glad you went through the effort?

yes. i have the same info you sent me. from what i see it is stating that they request that an individual send supporting documentation, and that because of high demand it will take aditional time. it also says that it will review each idividual based on cases by case. i guess i am reading the cali board info different then you. thanks for the information either way.

However, it is highly probable that you will have a decision before August. Good luck!

And I have a good character, so it wouldn't make sense to let something like underage beer carrying stop me from dreaming big. Lets just say, I have had it get in my way more times then I would have ever imagined. I truly can't imagine having something like a DUI or a drug charge on my record. I know what I've gone through for beer possession (mind you age 20 and it was unopened. Was carrying groceries from the car to my apartment with my 21 year old roommate and stopped by a campus police officer on a bicycle). Anyways, yes as long as you do what they ask I have had no problems, just hold ups in processing and I always get references everywhere I go. We all make mistakes, some of us get caught and some don't. But it doesn't make any of us worse then any others.

well, i think it will come down to following up the best i can, and also provide them with the most information that i can to show, like you did, why i deserve to have a license. After all, hopefuly most of us are good people and good nurses. thanks for the insight, and im sure it ill work out if its suppose to! :

Hi NurseRies,
I am wondering how you went about receiving you license in Massachusetts. I am in a similar situation. I received a misdemeanor underage possession of alcohol 13 years ago (at 18) in the state of VA. I paid my fines and had no further legal issues. Well I am currently applying to sit for my boards, I have all of my documentation to send to the board. But there is one issue... My court records were destroyed about 2 years ago and I no longer have access to them (found this out over the summer when I was getting my paperwork in order). Did you find yourself in a similar situation because your case was old too? What I am able to send is a copy of the original receipt from paying my fines, a copy of an official background check from VA (which interesting doesn't show any charges) and a letter from the court stating their policy on the length of time they will retain their records for, in addition to all of the other documents that the board is requesting. Did you find that you had a lot of delays with getting a license in Massachusetts? Sorry for the long post, but I am nervous it is going to take for ever for the board to review my application. I work super hard in school (finished first in my class with a 4.0) and I just want to move forward with my new career. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
