Tell me about your Hospital!

Hey guys, I'm a Stepdown/PCU nurse and I have been traveling for a handful of years at this point. I've finally decided that I'd like to stick in one spot for a bit. Since I'm super mobile, I can be pretty picky about where I try to work. I'm looking to learn a new specialty, preferably ICU, but I'd do ED at well. Here's what I'm looking for:

Level II Trauma center or better (prefer Level I)

SELF SCHEDULING (ICU, ED, PCU or the like)

12 Hour days

Help me brainstorm! I just traveled and lived in my van for 2 YEARS and paid off all my student loans...now I'm ready to increase my skill set, but I still want the freedom to possibly work part time and schedule time to visit my family. Thanks for your help!

Hello, I apologize for replying to your question with another question, but your post made me curious as to where you enjoyed traveling the best of the places you have been so far?

I'm pretty sure that if you want part time in a new specialty, you'll need to get trained in that unit first. They probably won't let you go part time for a little while (maybe 6+ months?). Why not find a location you want to be at for a while, and get your training there, maybe even close to family. After that, you'll be good to do the travel or per diem in your new specialty?

Sure! I'm not concerned about that. I'd work full time for a bit. This post was more looking for hospitals that meet my criteria. Do you have any recommendations?

I've been to a lot of places! I've travel a lot before I was a nurse also so I haven't seen anything totally new. That being said I guess it depends on what you like. I chased a big pay check to Florida and actually enjoyed the beaches there. Oregon pays great too and Portland is a crazy fun city. I'm in the middle of nowhere Idaho at the moment, but there are 6-7 world class ski resorts within 3 hours of me! You can make it whatever you want. Just don't settle ;). Figure out where you want to go and use social Media and job search engines like "nursefly" to find a gig there. You don't have to be loyal to any one company. Let them fight over you. Just work your butt off for those awesome references.

It sounds like you've had some great experiences, RnRnNurse and got some good feedback from members.

But I have to admit to you what I thought every time I saw the title of your thread "Tell me about your hospital!"

"It's a big building with patients and doctors and nurses but that's not important right now."
