Telemetry - Any advice for a student nurse?

Published

I'm going to be working in the Telemetry unit this summer as a Student Nurse Tech. I know my job will be limited but could I get some advice on what to study before starting so I can feel a little prepared and actually show that I'm interested in learning all I can in this new job. Other than my nursing school textbooks, are there any recommended websites where I can get some pre-training.

try to see if there's a local place offering a basic EKG class. that would definitely help you understand different heart rhythms.

An ECG, ACLS, PALS classes are helpful if you can afford them. As a nursing student, I found the following website helpful for the heart rhythms: Tools | SkillStat Learning - Fast, Fun and Effective!

Specializes in Critical Care, ED, Cath lab, CTPAC,Trauma.

I admire your drive and determination but the monitors will not be a responsibility of yours. It might be helpful for you to learn some so you know what the nurses are talking about......but the monitor will not be in your scope of practice.

I am sure you will learn a TON this summer just in time management and the care of the patients....GoodLuck!!!!

I work on a tele floor and if you want to look up a few things you can look up CHF, ejection fraction, a-fib, sinus brady and pace makers, the effects of magnesium on a heart rate rhythm, MI signs and symptoms and patho, stress test and heart cath what these tests are for and how they can help the patient. On a tele floor you will see these things and although you will mainly be taking vitals and helping out it might help you remember things when you see it first hand. Good luck. :)
