TEAS testing

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

So the nursing program I am hoping to apply to once I finish pre reqs just added the requirement of TEAS testing. What should I focus on for this? And since I can't apply for the nursing program until next spring is it better to wait to take it and finish this semester (have more knowledge) and then take it? Or just take it now and see how well I can do? Is there a book I should get for it? I really can't figure out what exactly this test is for, and since its new to the program I am a bit unsure of how to approach studying for it.

I'm taking mine on friday. I've used the ATI study manual and the mcgraw hill 5 entrance exams book. Both were helpful in there own way. Honestly if I were to do it over I wouldn't have bought the ATI book, and rather just have learned the info on my own via youtube and then bought the practice tests (the ATI one online)

The test consists of 4 sections (at least version 5 does)

-Math

-Reading

-Science

-English and Language usage.

Math is mostly basic algebra, fractions, decimals, perccentages.

Reading is just that, answering questions from a passage you just read

Science is A&P, Chemistry, Earth science, Scientific method etc

English is proper grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and I've encountered quite a few spelling questions.

There is a whole board here on allnurses dedicated to the TEAS, I'm sure you could find more detailed info there ;)

I just took the TEAS exam on Monday (8/19) and received a 91.3%, so it is pretty fresh in my mind at this point. I am applying to be in an accelerated post-bacc BSN program, and my previous degree is in marketing with an english minor, so keep that in mind when I explain what I worked on in preparation for the exam.

I used the ATI study manual, as well as some general questions on the internet to see how the test was organized. The study manual especially helps with understanding the format of questions, as well as how answers are decided upon (for the practice tests (2) that are included with the manual, it provides explanations for each correct answer, as well as why the other answers are incorrect). I didn't study reading or math too much at all, as my first practice test I only missed one in each category due to my first bachelor's degree. However, I reviewed the heck out of my science, as well as the english/language usage section (this section is TRICKY, so please do yourself a favor and study it; never underestimate what you think will be "easy" on this exam).

The test itself is completely randomized, so I can't tell you what questions you will and will not receive. Just make sure you have an operable knowledge of the topics covered in the study manual, and you should do fine. Also, note that the science section is very heavily based upon previously acquired knowledge; you either know it or you don't. I took four days to study prior to taking the exam, and have a 4.0 GPA, so make sure you understand your current comprehension level of your sciences and math before you structure your studying.

Best of luck!

Don't take the real test just to see how well you can do. It's expensive to take the test and most schools have limit on how many times you can take it. Instead, buy a prep book and take one full test to see how well you can do and whether your mock exam score is close to where you want to be. Then you can decide when you want to take it.

The 2 widely-used prep books are the official guide (ATI Manual) and McGraw-Hills TEAS 5 Practice Tests. Read the ATI Manual and you will learn everything about the test. The McGraw-Hills book is a good practice tool with 5 mock exams especially for the Reading, Math, and English sections. The last mock exam, after you practiced on the ATI Manual and MH, you should do is the ATI Online Practice exams which are computer-based and simulate the real testing experience.
