Patient could not get leg bag nozzle out of Foley catheter without assistance. Leg bag tube also came apart too easily from its nozzle. Basically I'm having trouble getting this gentleman independent with changing between bags so he can leave the house again and go fishing.

Is it possible to teach a family member to do this for him? Maybe he can just wear the leg bag all the time and just empty it frequently.

I had an 89 year old, he just wore the leg bag all of the time and would get up once during the night to empty it. It was much easier for him to do that than to be constantly switching between the bags!

If it's a problem because of his motor skills you could do an OT consult to see if they could be of any assist. I had to do this with a patient to get him independent with ostomy care once.

I agree with an OT referral, that may help, I personally do not like leg bags at night, I'm afraid of a urine backup and a UTI
I will look into OT. And I am wondering how to select a better leg bag that doesn't come apart between its nozzle and tubing so easily.
