Teaching Hospital vs. Non-teaching

Hello,

I will graduate in May and I have interviewed at several places in NC - Duke, Moses Cone Health System and Frye Regional...I have heard from several nurses that working at a teaching hospital like Duke or Baptist can limit learning opportunities because there are so many residents around and they kind of take over assessment care and nurses don't get to do a lot - especially in the ED where I want to work. Any thoughts on that from you guys?

I started out in a teaching hospital in the ER. I think I actually learned more, even though there are a lot of residents. Even though the teaching aspect is geared towards training those residents, the attending and the residents usually will take the time to answer questions you might have about a case or procedure. You will see more complex cases than you will at a non-teaching hospital.

Another plus is that you always have someone there that you don't mind calling @ 0300 for something petty, but has to have a MD order.
