Tarrant County College Fall 2012

Published

So I think we are well into the application period so, surely it is time to start up this board. I can not wait until we hear back in May. Trying to keep very busy while waiting. Good luck to everyone applying!! Hopefully we can keep each other company here and celebrate our successes!!

My husband said, "Yeah, they're gonna tell y'all on Friday. Then whoever got in can have the weekend to celebrate & if you didn't, you have time to drown your sorrows a little before you start calling them on Monday".

He's a goob!

I'm with Loly. (I was frantically reading their thread 6 months ago :)) I know it's hard to wait for the emails. Believe me, I was an alternate. #17 on the list no less! And it was the worst after all the emails went out and I still had to wait for one... Then wait for the acceptance day to pass until the next round went out. That was torture. But alas! One evening, after not checking my email for 3 days, there it was! I had lost hope and everything was renewed. Then, I was CRAZY trying to get all my stuff done. So here's my advice to you all:

1. Get your immuno's at the health dept. if you don't have insurance yet. They are super cheap and will validate all your previous records from high school, jobs, etc. Get there 15 minutes before they open in the morning and you will be out of there so fast! Come later and get ready to wait for hours.

2. There's a request to sign up for a theory class that is 50% face to face and 50% online. TAKE IT! I was put in that class because they gave my schedule to someone else, but it turned out to be the best thing ever! Ms. C is life-changing. If you are a mom, worker or just plain busy, the days off are a lifesaver. There are some weeks where you are on campus only ONE day!

3. You don't go to clinical for 3 weeks after class starts. So you dont need your scrubs until then. If you are a brokie like me, scrubs are an unavoidable expense. Waiting those few weeks made it so much easier to budget for books, tuition, supplies.

4. As Loly said, the roller backpacks are unnecessary unless you have a terrible back.

5. The bundle from majors gives you the option of buying the text, etext or both! Having your book on your ipad, kindle or laptop makes life so much easier! You can highlight and it will use your highlights to create a study guide!

6. Read or study something every day. Even if its just for 30 minutes. The testing style is very different and they will make you think you are downright going to fail your first exam and prepare you to kiss those A's goodbye. NOT TRUE! Read, study and be a diligent, ambitious student like you are and you will ACE IT!

7. Buy a HESI/NCLEX book and do a little bit every week all semester long. You take a HESI at the end of each semester to assess what you've learned and it helps to prepare! We just had ours this morning and my studying paid off!

8. MAke time for yourself, spouse, SO, family. We don't want you to make it through nursing school with only your ADN. You need those people in your life.

I think that's all I have for now. I'm sure I will def remember more later. But finally, remember to BREATHE. You are not alone. There are over 100 other students who are feeling overwhelmed right by your side. Make friends, create bonds and you will survive!

Good luck :) Kristin

Thank you soooo much for this Kristin!! Very uplifting and motivating to hear this right now!!! Glad to hear you got in after having to wait for so long!!

Kristin (Manow)

You are a sweetheart! Loly, you too. Thanks for the encouragement and the info!

I hope you know that some of us are really taking note of all the things you are emphasizing on here.

It is hard planning for future events when we are still on this side of finding out if we are even accepted.

I'm sure I will come back to this site and read your posts several times (if I do get in).

Thanks for taking the time to post. It will be helpful and I'm sure we will do the same for those who come after us.

Kristin thank you so much!! I really, really appreciate y'all giving us all this wonderful advice, I know y'all are super busy with it being the end of the year, and yet you still made time to give us newbies some much needed advice and motivation! It is more helpful than you know!! Thank you!!

Kristen and Loly, thank you for your encouraging words! Yeah, yesterday was tough and your posts really helped me gain some perspective. I agree that calling is not going to do anything at this point. If anything, it made things worse, having all our expectations on yesterday/this week just to have it postponed again. As much as I dislike their timing, there's really nothing we can do about it but wait. ARGH there's that word again!

Okay guys and gals, we can do this! I for one, think I need to limit my computer time this week. It just plain puts me in a bad mood seeing that empty mailbox! Let's keep our hope alive, we've come this far and good news is just around the corner. Glad to know that as many as 17 alternates got accepted last semester too. No news is still good news!!

Thanks Kristin! And thanks again Loly! I really do feel a lot better, and I am going to change my attitude about the whole thing starting today, I have become pretty cranky and consumed with all of the waiting. So, I am getting away from the computer as well today and going to be productive. I finally got my kids bike trailer and am going to see how far I can cart my 2 and 5 year old today. I have been a cranky momma and need to stop checking my phone and email 200x a day and spend extra time doing fun things with them, because next semester it could be different (hopefully!)

Sorry for being negative Nancy on the board! I wish us all good luck and can't wait to hopefully meet y'all!! Nursing school sounds so fun!

Has anyone gotten a stethoscope or have a recommendation on where to buy one?

Thanks everyone for the tips!!!! They are soooo helpful!! Omg you don't even know!! I appreciate all of y'all seriously and I wish luck to everyone!!! I'm so happy a friend of mine told me about this sight I don't feel like I'm in this alone anymore!!!!

Another day down, keep your head up we are one day closer!! :)

I'm so glad I found this site- I applied for fall 2012 as well. I was going crazy yesterday waiting for an email. Looks like I'll be waiting a little longer. This is the second semester in a row I have been rejected from UTA- words can't describe the disappointment I felt reading the email/letters. This is my first time applying to Tarrant County- and I'm praying I got in. I don't know if i can handle another rejection. I feel so much better finding this little support group. I wish everbody the best and I sure hope the email comes soon!

Okay, yes, I am getting manipulative, I sent an email today to the nursing department playing dumb. I informed them I was concerned because I had not received anything from them. I pointed out that their mandatory information presentation slide show stated we would get one of three responses by May 1st. I played concerned, but really just felt the need to point out that they are the ones that said by May 1st, and we did not make that up! Okay i think I have passed anxious and become angry. I probably need to chill...I did use great etiquette...

Lol B&C! Well it'll be interesting to see what they reply back to you!
