Hello! I haven't found a thread yet for anyone applying to this program. Any others out there? ?

hey @volfar

do you think you have learned enough from the program to become a successful nurse and practice in the field?

Congrats on receiving an acceptance offer! That is a huge accomplishment! I hope that everyone who hasn't heard from the university yet gets a favorable notification soon!

In my opinion, this program is just alright. It isn't terrible, but it also isn't what I thought a nursing program would be. I don't have any experience with other nursing programs, so it is hard for me to say whether the problems I have with this program would be absent elsewhere - but I would certainly hope so.

For example, I think some of the professors' pedagogical approaches are disorganized, almost as if they were put together without much effort or consideration for the student's experience. From receiving assignments with unclear or contradictory instructions to being quizzed over material that a professor agrees is not covered in their course.

There are some things about this program that I have genuinely enjoyed as well. Admittedly, the most significant example doesn't have much to do with the program itself, but instead with my classmates. The relatively small size of the ABSN cohorts (about 30 students) and the nature of going through challenging experiences with other people is a perfect recipe for relationship building. I think a big part of our success so far has been thanks to the support we have been able to offer one another.

Some other things you may find helpful to know are:

  1. Each semester we take one graduate course. A lot of research and some essay writing, but an opportunity to start working toward an advanced nursing degree, nonetheless.
  2. This program uses a concept-based curriculum, as opposed to a block-based curriculum.
  3. The program has a primary-care focus, so you likely will not get clinical rotations in ICUs or EDs.
  4. The ABSN program at TAMUCC is relatively new (I am in the university's 2nd cohort).

Also, keep in mind that my cohort began the program in June 2020, a few months after the COVID-19 pandemic began. The pandemic may be to blame for some of the shortcomings I've experienced in this program.

Please let me know if you have any more questions or if you'd like me to elaborate on anything.

Congrats again!

@volfar  is there anything you wish had studied or read before starting the program to better prepare you for example labs, flipped class room etc?

Hi everyone! I heard back from the school about 2 weeks ago about my acceptance! I am equally excited and anxious to start this journey! Congrats to all the other admits!

Just curious has anyone heard anything from them? I’ve heard back from the other school I applied to but this was my first choice program so just curious if anyone has heard anything?

thanks!?

I interview the 22nd of Feb and Karen Scott said we should hear back by March 16th if that helps!

Hey y’all! I reached out to one of my friends that was in the 2020 class and she said the program is definitely overwhelming but doable. The books she used the most were her med surg book, fundamentals, and the giddens concepts book. She also said she was given 15 chapters of reading a week and it’s important to at least glance over all the chapter because they use questions from every chapter?? I hope this helps everyone!

also have y’all started the castle branch checklist? Are we supposed to complete everything by the start date?

@volfar  sorry for all the questions, I'm trying to find real life experiences/reviews about the school and program. If you're able to provide a little bit of iinsight that would be awesome! ?

How do you feel about the competency of the program, staff etc?  If you could do it over again, would you pick this school? (Regardless of the pandemic).

Can the disorganization be attributed to the pandemic or something else such as lazy staff and people not taking their jobs seriously?

Thanks in advance...any insight is appreciated since those who were accepted are investing alot of money, time, leaving their jobs, and relocating to participate in the accelerated program.  I'd hate for it to be a bad investment and experience.

Hi everyone,

Sorry I haven't been able to keep up with the discussion here! I'll start working on responses now. Give me a few minutes! :)

@volfarthank you. Also, were any of the students in your cohort able to hold full or part time jobs while in the accelerated program?

Yes, a few students have part-time jobs. I don't think anyone has a full-time one though. Working will likely make the program more challenging, but it is not impossible to do both simultaneously.

I think I've learned enough to stand a chance on the NCLEX. I am confident in the skills I have learned throughout the program, but I think that most of my learning will take place on the floor as a graduate nurse.

That is a good question, but no, not really. If I were you, I would try my best to enjoy the calm before the storm! But there are plenty of resources out there if you want to prepare. I can help you find some if you are having trouble.

I understand! I would want these answers if I were in your shoes too!

No, I would likely not choose this program again. Some professors are wonderful and competent educators, and others are not.

The disorganization could be attributed to the pandemic, laziness, or several other factors. It is hard for me to say with certainty.

I would hate for it to be a bad investment or experience too! I know this message is coming a bit late, but I hope the information I have provided so far can help y'all make an informed decision.
