Talk to me about state jobs

Many people, whose opinions I greatly value, suggest getting into a state job. The perks of the state job are pay, great bennies, retirement, etc.

But is it worth starting off in a job that may not be ideal, to later transfer but stay in the state system? What if there is an ideal job elsewhere with a better schedule but mediocre benefits and pay?

In my state while the benefits are excellent the pay is horrible. I never felt the bad pay was worth the sacrifices which at least in my area include a fairly stagnant work force and all the politics that go along with state and federal jobs. I will say I'm very money oriented and function well when the harder I work there is a chance to make significantly more money in overtime, holidays etc. so this is probably another reason state jobs didn't appeal to me. There are people I know who love the reliability and comfort of having a job where they can work til they retire, M-F with little chance of ever being fired.

What kind of situation do you prefer?

Good point. I didn't think about the politics and then the always looming budget cuts. I don't plan on being in CT for much more than another decade so it may not be worth it
