Any veterans who took nursing 112 at BMCC care to chime in and recommend what is the best way to study for the exams that will be administered? I heard that critical thinking is crucial, but can anyone mention some good text or resource to use for study besides the textbook of course?

Thanks,

Nurse212

The questions on the tests do require some more thought -- some are just a yes or no question. But most require some more thought -- such as a "what if" or "what first".

It takes some getting used to -- but it's not that difficult.

I would recommend getting some review books, such as Mosby's, Saunder's or Lippincotts for Fundamental Nursing. Most of them come with review cd-roms, and they're a wonderful review tool .

Also -- save these for studying for the NCLEX!!!

Good luck with the program!

Hi, sorry I can't give you any advice, I am looking for someone who is taking the Nursing Courses at BMCC. I will start 4 prerques in Spring 08 and wanted to know the hours the nur is offered. What i your schedule like? I need to work and hope that I can attend the NUR classes. The website is a little confusing. I heard that it is divided into 2 seven week parts. Please let me know what your section is like: example on class schedule on website--- sect 131 tu- 8-3:45-hosp

th- 1-2:40 S753

f- 1-2:40

th- 3-4:40

f- 3-4:40

notice how it starts tues to fri, then goes into thur to fri, what does it mean? 7 weeks for each? I was just offered a job as a medical assistant Mon and WEd 11:30 to 8pm and sat 8am to 3:30 and Nursing Proc II schedule conflicts with my hours. boy, am I stressed out. And when I call BMCC NUrsing Dept they are rude. Ant advice?

myleena,

The schedule is Thursday, 1 to 4:40 pm with a 20 minute break in between. The same on Friday. You go to the hospital for clinical on Tuesday. It looks like your work schedule will work out perfectly. As far as 7 week schedules go, 1st and 4th semesters are all one topic each, Fundamentals and Med-Surg, respectively. You go to one clinical site each semester. 2nd and 3rd semesters are divided up as follows: 2nd semester Labor & Delivery for the first half (7 weeks) followed by Psychiatric nursing (7 weeks). 3rd semester is Med-surg (1st half) followed by Pediatrics (2nd half). All four of these each has a different clinical location.

I hope that explains it for you.

As for how to study, get study guides and practice answering questions as Kahlo mentioned. Get used to what the questions will look like.

Thank you Optimistic1,

I feel much better now. In NUR 211 my schedule still conflicts. But, the job that I will be working for will accommodate my hours, where they will switch them. Will BMCC allow me to take my prereq's in the day for 3 days and one class at night , I hope so. I was told either I go as a day student or evening weekend student. I would like at least Sunday off to rest. I plan on taking all four classes in one semester. So, all I would have to take are the clinicals. I appreciate your advice.

OOPS, I meant to ask what professors are good? I have to take the following:

Anat&Phy II, Math for Health Sciences, Microbiology and Intro to Sociology. I plan on going during the day. In order to go to evening classes you have to go on sat's. I have an hearing impairment in left ear so, I need a professor that speaks loud and clearly.

Hi there,

I am a preclinical student in BMCC, hoping to get into Nursing this Jan. These are some really good professors, for APII= Slavin,

MIcro= Peter Nguyen, Mat 104=Claire Wladis- I took her Online Class, and im not sure about sociology cuz I took Developmental Psychology instead! Good luck!!

Thank you for responding. I have a choice to take developmental psychology. You stated you should get in in Jan, so there isn't a long waiting list. I wish you the best, "you'll get in".

Myleena

Since I was an evening student I had to take all of my pre-req's prior to getting into the program. As a day student, you can take them at the same time as the nursing courses, but I'm not sure exactly how that works. Check with the dept. on that.

As far as Professors, I liked Nguyen for Micro also, and Glenn Miller for Mat 104 was good too. A&P II I don't remember but wouldn't recommend anyway, and I didn't take Soc. I took developmental psych online and it was really easy. I don't remember her name, though. Do your best to get A's in those four core courses, because they are the only one's that matter in terms of getting into the program. Good luck!

No, there is not waiting list in BMCC. As long as you have the 4 pre-reqs and Micro, Dev psy if ur going for evening and have a GPA above 3.7 you should be good

Hi FutureRN19, I want to thank you for your help. I emailed the Professor of the online course dep't. Waiting for a response. MAT 104 is not available. When did you take it? Fall, Spring? They will have psy240 avail in spr 08 and sum 08. I want to take microb and anat&p II on campus and psy240 and Mat104 on line. Some of the professors are not available in the spr08 or on my available time. I'll have to take my chances. I am available for classes tues, thurs, and fri.

Hi Optimistic1,

You mentioned that you are doing clinicals at a hospital. What hospitals do the interns practice in? How is it so far for you? Do you do the classes first at BMCC for a couple of weeks then afterwards the hospital?
