Taking Microbio and Statistics at the same time?

Published

Hi all-

I'm fairly new to the forums, and this is my first post.. I'm a returning student... work full time, I've been taking 2 classes a semester in the evenings and wondering if this class combo is possible without pulling my hair out! I'm married, no kids I work 40+ hours a week and I've taken A&P 1 and 2

Thanks for your input..

They both are harder classes but it depends on the instructor. I don't have much to do for class and not a whole lot of studying right now as alot of Micro builds on Bio and Chem, statistics just depends on how good you are at math. I do no see a problem with taking those classes at the same time.

I love math (it's easy and systematic, and I wish all of life ran that way, lol) and I have a lot of chemistry and lab experience, so I found micro not very difficult, and a whole lot of fun, actually. But I never did get over the fact that they let us play with those pathogens. eek. Depending on how much extra work your prof makes you do, and some are really pains, you might have a class you can almost coast through, or one that almost buries people. So definitely find out from those who've taken that prof how much work and how much extra research to expect.

Statistics, I didn't think was very challenging at all, and I didn't spend a lot or time on it to get a B. It was mostly just figure out what was derived from what data, and what was related to what, and then calculate it. Pretty straightforward and absolutely right out of the textbook.

A&P were far much more study time outside of class, and tons more rote memorization.

Sure. Why not? Just be ready to work!

Thanks everyone- I forgot to mention that I'm math challenged.. :) And yes you're right, the professor could make all the difference in how the classes go

I found Stats to be quite difficult and I have a PhD in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology...so I am ok in the mathematics department (i.e Calculus). I am an older student (35) and was irritated to have math taught on a fancy calculator (unlike when I was in college). I had to earn that A in Statistics! Microbiology can be a difficult course and the labs can be annoying.

It is possible to take both classes and do well in them while working. Before signing up, I would ask around for the "good" instructor. These grades matter and every A boosts your application and your confidence.

Both of those classes was super easy for me. It definitely depends on the instructor though... and what kind of statistics. I took a psych stats class in 3 weeks (11 days of class, 5 tests!).
