Taking Med/Surg next semester! What helped u?

Published

Ok guys/gals

First of all, congrats on making thru NS>

Ist semester of NS is almost over.Yeah!

Next semester we start Med/Surg and Pharmacology, etc. I am hearing that Med/Surg is really tough. Besides your textbook, what supplemental book or method/habit really helped u or made it(ms/surg) easy to understand or handle?

We have 3 weeks xmas break, what's your recommendation while I am on xmas break?

Tks

I think the last poster might have been referring to 'fluid and electrolytes made easy' It is a great book. I have an organization sheet I used for clinicals and now use for work. If your interested feel free to PM me your email address and I'll send you a copy,

Hey Jen, I'm starting med/surg this semester as well, orientation tomorrow! I would love it if you could send me a copy of your organizational sheet, that was one of one my biggest things last semester, I just didn't really know how to organize myself and it seemed all the nurses I was paired with didn't know how to either. You can e-mail it to [email protected].. I really appreciate it.

And I agree fluids and electrolytes made easy is a great book, just a suggestion, buy the earlier editions off half.com or amazon and you can get it for as cheap as $12!

I've never had the time to read every bit of assigned reading in this text that weighs almost as much as I do! So, what helped me get concepts, conditions, causes, tx, nursing priorities etc in a flash was: "Straight A's in Medical-Surgical Nursing" by Lippincott. It is a very condensed version of conditions by body system. Also, to get the bigger concepts that will be the basis of understanding med-surg: "Manual of I.V. Therapeutics by Lynn Dianne Phillips, 4th edition, and the ISBN number is0-8036-1187-0(pbk). This book is very easy to read format, yet explains some difficult concepts like acid-base balance, fluids and electrolytes, and much more. Good Luck! SG

Those NCLEX test question review books helped me the most, but that is just specific to my program. Study hard and good luck :)
