Take pool position or wait??

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

I have an interview this week (yay!) for a Pool LPN position working in psych/chemical dependancy. I do have chemical dependancy experience-although i currently work at a methadone clinic which is waaaaay different then a recovery center, i assume. My issue is I need a full time job. I have a toddler in daycare and also have bills to pay like everyone else. This job sounds really good but the Pool shift kinda scares me. I mean, how do you guys who work pool pay all your bills? I know its not impossible but how does it work? I know every place has a different definition of 'pool'. The lady on the phone told me they would call me when they need a shift to be covered and i could say no if i couldnt work it. I told her I'm concerned b/c i need a full time position. She said that I can always apply for a full time position with the company. I'm going to the interview anyway to get more info, but if theres any nurse out there in a similiar situation please let me know! Thanks! ;)

I work for an agency that calls me when they need me. I mistakenly started with them with the idea that they had plenty of work. Since they rarely call me and have told me the only reason they do call me is that no other nurses are available, I am looking for something elsewhere. You need to do what is best for you. OK to sign up with these people for whatever work they provide, but don't stop looking elsewhere for a full time position.

yea i was thinking the same thing. It seems that everyone is hiring PRN now, too. But I also dont want to take a chance and have it blow up in my face. Eventually I will find something full time.

Depending on how much they call you, it is possible you will be able to provide for your family. PRN usually pays more than full time. Be cautious, but always see what options are out there. You never know what may come your way. Are you working now? Maybe you can take the PRN position while you continue your search for a full-time job.

Good luck to you whatever you choose!
