Tacoma Community College Nursing Program

Hi... I was just accepted into the TCC Nursing Program. Does anyone out there have any advice or information to offer? I'd appreciate hearing about the program, instructors, clinicals, etc. Thanks! Oh, one more thing... if you are aware of any specific information that would be beneficial to review prior to starting, please let me know.

First of all, Thanks! to sandjomp for submitting information. I'ts great to hear from a sixth quarter student. For first quarter I am in the A class. My scedual is as follows

Mon- 10:30-12:50 Theory111

Tues- Library science. 9:00-10:20, Theory 111 10:30-12:50

Wed- clinicals started on third week Nursing Home 10:00-11:20

Thursday-113Lab 10:30-12:20, 112clinical 1:00-3:50

The B class is very similar sharing some classes with us and others that are started around 8-8:30. There are no evening clinicals offered first quarter. And they basically said that the scedual that is released in the catolog is never right, because they are required to submit something whether the clinical sites and times have been desided or

not.

I hope this helps!:wink2:

Thanks ladies! You have been very helpful so far! I just don't understand why they couldn't tell us this info up front. I do understand that the schedule changes and that we can't know our schedule until right before the quarter starts. I just needed an idea so I can find childcare, you know? So first quarter looks like around 15 hours a week for class/clinicals. Does that sound about right?

Can you give me an idea of hours for clinicals after first quarter? I thought I read somewhere that they are mostly 7-3 or 3-11. Does that sound accurate or are there many more choices than that? And how many days a week are clinicals after first quarter? I thought they said at the nursing info session something about classes usually being 2 days a week (like M-T) and clinicals being the other 2 or 3 days, but I can't remember. One more question specifically about clinicals...besides first quarter, when do clinicals start? I mean, do you usually have a few weeks of classes in the beginning of every quarter and then the last weeks of the quarter are clinicals?

I also have a daycare question related to clinicals. I'm thinking about using TCC's daycare which is a minimum of 5 hours per day 5 days a week. Will I need that much? So far that full-time price at TCC is cheaper than even the part-time price of daycares in my area. But another question I have is in regards to hours. I think the daycare hours are from 7-5:30 which will pose a problem probably. If the clinicals really are from 7-3 and/or from 3-11, I won't be able to use the TCC daycare. Another question, do you ever have clinicals the same day as classes (like class Monday morning and then clinicals Monday afternoon)?

I'm sorry, I know these are probably hard questions to answer because the schedule is always different. But you've been so helpful giving me an idea of what to expect so far, I thought I'd go ahead and ask. Based on the schedule you've told me so far, and on the fact that I might be able to get night clinicals, I might be able to get away with part-time childcare and I need to know if that's an option. How many days a week, usually, will I need childcare? And approximately how many hours a week, both first quarter and also subsequent quarters? THANKS!

Here is the info I can remember:

1st quarter: clinicals were 1-2 days a week for only a couple of hours. The difference with this quarter is that you are going to multiple places and the hours are different. However, there was a sign up sheet that allowed the students to pick which times worked best for them. It was first come, first served but the other students were pretty flexible if you have a time issue.

2nd quarter: clinicals were one day a week for 4 hours, mine was from 3-7 at a LTC facility the first part of the quarter and 3-7 at Good Sam the second part of the quarter. The hospital clinicals include a majority of the time in med-surg, and one day in OR

3rd quarter: clinicals are done either 7-3 or 3-11 at various hospitals, I think just one day a week. Then there are also a couple of clinical days that are done at either a peds floor, mother baby unit, or L&D unit. There is also one day that is done at a clinic. These are also on a sign up sheet so you can pick your day and time.

4th quarter: Clinicals are twice a week for 8 hours from either 7-3 or 3-11. Hospitals were either St. Joes or Madigan at the time. The time is majority med-surg, but depending on the hospital you may also do IV therapy, cardiac cath lab, ER, and ambulatory care for one day each.

5th quarter: Two days a week at mental health from 7-3 for only two weeks, and two days a week at LTC for four weeks.

6th quarter: Preceptorship full time depending on your preceptor's schedule.

As far as how far into the quarter they start, it depends on the quarter and the group you are in. Most of the time they started a couple weeks into the quarter. There are several students in my class that have kids (including me) and the instructors try really hard to accommodate for day care issues.

Let me know if you have any more ?s

Wow! Thank you so much, that is very helpful :) It does give me a better idea what kind of daycare situation I'm going to need. I'd love to hear from more people too since the schedule is always different ;) You guys don't even know how much you've helped me so far.

Hey guys!

Hope everything is going well at school! I am hoping to get in this fall. My best friend and I are finishing our last pre-req this spring and hoping to keep our 4.0's!

We were just wondering if you could let us in on a few questions we have?

what are the uniforms like? Colors, fit, brand?

How about shoes, are there any color or type requirements?

Can you use a pda that is also a phone? I am looking for a new phone and I was going to get a palm, but I would be very disapointed if I couldn't use it!

thank you thank you!

best of luck.

I was just wondering if anyone knew the lowest GPA's that were just accepted into the Spring '08 RN program is. Thanks!

My friend told me that someone with a 3.4 got in by accepting part time and getting a slot when a full timer dropped. Pretty cool. Are you applying for fall? I am taking my last prerequisite right now. Good luck to you.

That is cool...How long into the quarter d! I sure am applying in the fall. I wonder if we have taken some classes together...possibly. What classes are you taking this quarter? I am in Anatomy and Physiology, English101, and Psychology100. It is a rough quarter:banghead:, but oh well! Hopefully I can pull through with a 4.0! What are you taking..and who are you taking it with...just wondered!

Good luck to you also!! :D

I am taking a and p 2 with halstead and a com class with ramos. We may have had classes together becasue it seems like I have a ton of people who are in most of my classes. Good luck this fall, I'm sure we will both get in :):typing

I am in Halstead too! I am pretty sure I know who you are in the class...cause you said your best friend is in your classes. I am guessing that you and your friend sold your Micro books to my friend and I...for Tison's class! Anyhow, I will see you in class on Friday. Have a great week!:nurse:

haha, which one are you? virginia? ginny?
