I will be starting a new job this week at an inpatient substance abuse center for teens aged 13 to 18. My background is in pediatric home health. Can anyone give me advice on what to expect? I will be working weekend days and two evenings a week.

I worked at an Inpatient detox for a few years. It was in the of the inner city. I guess the best advice I can give you is be real and be ready to teach. Know you substances like the back of your hand. Know how they are made, distributed and their effects on the body from start to finish. Addiction is serious with several mental health components, so brush up on behavioral health also. You are going to be looked at as a source of information. I would have all types of anatomy and physiology questions thrown at me. So know your stuff.

It's never dull. You have to know your drugs & definitely be able to stand your ground. A lot of the teens have come from varied backgrounds so they will try to manipulate you.

Thanks. I was told to be prepared to get manipulated. Seems they like to do that to the new nurse.

Thank you. I've been taking care of just one patient one on one in his home for the last 3 years. A young quad with a traumatic brain injury. Think it's time to brush up on my meds, etc.
