Switching to nursing

Published

Hello everyone! I have a BA from UCONN in human development and family studies. Unfortunately, I have a bunch of prerequisites to take before I can apply for an accelerated nursing program (I'm looking into southern ct state university and uconn). I've heard that scsu's ACE program is extremely competitive. Can anyone tell me what I need to get in prerequisite courses such as human bio, a&b 1 and 2, genetics, microbiology, and Chemistry to get into either program. I currently have a gpa of 3.6. Also worrying if it matters what community college I go to to take the prerequisites....say I don't do as well as I want to so I apply to a community college for an associates, does it make a difference if I took the prerequisites from that school. Would appreciate any and all feedback!! Thank you 😀🎉🎉

Hi there. I am a UCONN accelerated grad. Where you take prerequisites does not matter. Grades matter a lot. Even though decision is not based on grades only, as you have heard both the programs are extremely competitive (because they are good programs and reasonably priced), so the higher the better. Preferably As.

Thanks for your input!

Hi, I graduated from SCSU accelerated program. It does not matter where you complete your pre reqs. I completed mine at Gateway, Naugatuck, and Middlesex only because I had a goal to complete it within a yr. Grades are important, especially science but that's not what they base their decision on. I focused on getting A's in my science courses. Your essay and recommendations have to be strong. I'm not sure what they now require but they look at the overall application. You have to grab their attention in your essay. My overall GPA was not that high but my resume, essay, and recommendation balanced my grades out. Good luck!

Hi,

Look for what school requires (they provide codes for state Universities and colleges). I noticed different schools ask for different prerequisites. It doesn't matter what college you take it as long as the code match the code on their list and fits in time frame (UCONN asks Genetics to be done in a past 5 years). I would suggest reviewing teachers prior enrolling because with some you just will memorize or they may let you slide and it will be very difficult at the program if there is a gap.
