Swedish Nurse Residency for May 2014

U.S.A. Washington

Published

Hello everyone! I just applied to the Nurse Residency program at Swedish in Seattle, WA for the May 2014 cohort. Anyone else in the same boat? Getting excited? Would love to hear from folks who started in previous cohorts.

Thanks!

@Ecstatic2014 does your app say "under consideration"?

^^ No, my status just states that the application was submitted in February.

How do you check on the status of your application? I logged in, and it only lets me read the email that was sent out in February of this year, after submitting the online application.

I declined an offer from Swedish for their GYN surgery floor earlier this week, so if any of you applied for that one, a spot might be opening. I really liked the floor and the nurses who interviewed me, but frankly the fact that you aren't guaranteed placement on the floor you do your residency on is something that gave me pause. I think Swedish will need to revamp this aspect of their famed RN residency program if they're going to really attract new RNs, and not lose them to other hospitals.

If I recall correctly, only about 4-5 people out of ALL the residency cohorts (hundreds of residents) were placed on a different unit after the training period. So the risk is not high at all. But even if you have to be moved, getting in the residency program at least guarantees a spot/job somewhere in the system.

@ecstatic2014 Back in February I received an email confirming my submission with a link to check the status of my app. It will ask you to log in and then click on the My Jobpage tab. You should be able to see any completed submissions giving you a status. Mine says "under consideration" I just don't know if it's always been there or if I am actually being seriously considered.

@sweetjane I actually applied for GYN but for the september cohort. How was the interview process? if you don't mind sharing. Are you from WA?

I also received that same email on the day of electronically submitting my application.

When I check my account of "My Job" page, it just states that my application was submitted on that particular date.

(update)

Ah, nevermind. I also finally 'navigated' through the system, and see that my application is under review. The next step would be to get the lovely interview invite!

Best of luck to you too, Runnerchick. ;)

I grew up in Seattle but did nursing school out east. I was home visiting fam during the interviews. The process was great. The HR interview was very smooth, and it was clear to the woman who interviewed me that I needed to be on GYN surgery. I talked about my passion for women's healthcare, my experiences during senior clinical, and even though the questions were not behavioral specifically, I was able to generalize my clinical experiences to answer the questions with more detail than was being asked. The second interview was with 5 nurses from the floor, one of which was the nurse manager. It was also very smooth and friendly - they asked me behavioral questions and I needed to respond using SBAR. I got a tour of the floor thereafter. It was great! I really regret saying no to Swedish, because I thought the GYN team who I met were exceptionally nice, but I just needed to pick another job in the end.

^^ @ SweetJane. Would you happen to know if the interview process (i.e. 2-step with 5 diff. nurses) are the same for applicants applying to other departments at Swedish M.C.?

I'm not sure... but it seems like in previous threads that the first part is HR, and the second is behavioral questions is the nurse manager and several other nurses on the particular floor.

The HR interview is the first step for everyone. But after that it varies between departments. Some have a 2nd interview with the manager and panel of nurses. Others have a 2nd interview with just the manager, and then a 3rd interview with a panel. And then finally sometimes it's just a 2nd manager interview and no panel at all. I have heard of all of that happening via other residents.

@ SweetJane & MiniBSNRN. Thank you for the Swedish Residency interview process information!
