Survey on PICC placement

Published

Doing a little survey on different facilities PICC placement policies/procedures.... I would appreciate input from anyone who can. You can send me a PM or post here.

I am looking for the following info:

Do your nurses place PICCs at bedside? With ultrasound??

How many PICCs are placed a year at your facility? How big is your facility? (name and location if possible)

If you work in Home or Outpatient Infusion, do your nurses place PICCs?

Who reads xray to verify placement?

Thank you for your input!:p

I work for a home infusion company and the nurses place them in the home. They are either x-rayed by a mobile unit or the patient is sent to the hospital.

Thanks for the response! Where are you? (Just the state, region or country if you want).

In Canada, place PICCs with U/S using Modified Seldinger Technique.

Work alone, place 2-3 PICCs a day usually, in-pts and out-pt (Ca Clinic usually). Only work in hospital, Rad has to read x-ray.

I only do adults, Rads do the babies and kids. Some Rads think I should do them too...Only one pair of hands though, PICC nurses I know of who insert on kids work as a team.

Hope that answers your questions

We have a group of PICC'ers in our hospital that do them bedside. We have about 320 beds,as a hospital we do around 175 PICCs a month between the RN's and the Rads. The Rads read the CXR's if they're around, but if they aren't around we can usually find an in-house resident or ER doc who'll check the CXR.

Mobile, AL

approx 300 beds

Currently, I am the only PICC cert. RN and I place PICCs with U/S using Modified Seldinger Technique.

I place about 25 PICC a week. When I am off, the radiologist places the PICCs. And boy do they fuss! They would prefer I not have an off day. Our RN PICC program is only about 6 months old. We have three more nurses about to be trained and then we will actively seek out PICCs to be placed.

I estimate we can do between 5-10 daily.

Work at an LTAC facility in Louisiana. 70 beds. 4 certified PICC nurses. Do about 2 to 10 per week using modified seldinger and ultrasound.

Am PICC placer in Uk (quite a way behind Us as far as PICCs go!) I place approx 3 a week mainly for small outpatients chemotherapy unit. I only place in clinical area but often get asked to place for the rest of the hospital, inthat case I do not place by bed but get them down to my unit. Am just starting placing with US guidance. Currently training a couple of anaesthetists to take over the non chemo work so I can concentrate on my role properly. Radiologists in my hospital do not place PICCs...or skin tunnelled lines...or ports...all down to the anesthaetists! Different world!

Yes PICC lines are placed at the bedside but without the use of ultrasound.

The placement is confirmed by xray.

I work in a 120 bed facility. I would say we have 500 PICC per year.

I work in HH also and I have many many patients with PICC lines but they all come home from the hospital with them already in place.

PICCs at bedside, using MST and US.

80 bed hospital.

3-7 PICCs/wk

Indiana

3 PICC RNs who all work ICU
