Surgical Techs?

What exactly do surg techs do? Where can they work besides OR? Is this a job that I would be able to do for the rest of my life or would I get "too old" to handle it? If I did surg tech, would it be possible to work in Labor and Delivery?

Surgical techs work in OR's, L&D, outpatient surgical centers, and as private scrubs for doctors. Can you do it at 60? Working as a tech takes a toll on your body, but so does nursing. Lifting, sometimes long hours, call, etc. AST has a good description of what techs do, and some very good friends of mine are current L&D techs.

the facility where i work does not use techs in l&d, only rns. it will vary from place to place so check it out in your area.

on the average pay rates you may find, remember to factor in the cost of living and realize that starting pay and average pay are different.

Yes you can do it as long as you want and make a good living. We have two PRN techs that have been scrubbing over 40 years. One is close to 70. You have to check with hospitals but yes you can work in L&D. I did it for about 6 months but got bored and was scared that I would lose my real surgical skills so I went back to the main OR which is much more exciting. I absolutly LOVE my job. Yes sometimes I am exhausted and just want to go home but it is so worth it and you will never stop learning. There is so much you can do. It is like a whole unique world. You become very close to your docs and co--workers. It's great knowing that you just helped save someones life even if it is at midnight after you have been working for 18 hours. Oh by the way that is not the normal work day but when you are on call for a 24 hour period you never know what will happen. Try it you will love it!!!!!!
