surgical tech vs. rn

Published

Hello everyone!

I have just been accepted into the surg. tech program, but my main interest is nursing in a pediatric field. I really want to make the right choice because I'm already 37. The main thing that scares me about nursing is the math...I suck at math. Please give me some feedback of your opinions. Thank you!

If your goal is to be a nurse is peds then why are you thinking about being a surgical tech? Two different jobs.

Peds medication calculations are all weight based but once you learn the formulas it's easy.

It's subjective to say but nursing math isn't hard... Fear of math shouldn't be a reason to not pursue your goal. Go for it!

I also feared math but once I mastered the formula I scored the highest grade on my final....I'm 39 and just starting a new career in nursing..so many career options in nursing just believe and have faith.. You can make it happen..best wishes ?

The math isn't really that hard. It's all basic arithmetic, you just have to pay real close attention. There is no room for error. Although in the real world the math is pretty much done for you anyway.

I've just always wanted to work in the medical field and when I got accepted into the surgical program, I got excited. Once I calmed down, reality kicked in and I know it's nursing that I want to do. Thank you for your response.

surgical tech what i know is you will only scrub to the pediatric surgery cases. not much paper works. the only "math" thing you will do is to do sponge.needles and instruments count :snurse:

Nursing math is NOT hard! You will make more money as an RN, which is nice. Become a nurse if thats what is in your heart!
