Nurses General Nursing

ok I have a question for you surgical nurses.

I would love to work in the OR but I went to a interview and the nurse manager said well You dont fit for our unit I quess.

I was told well maybe if you keep working and get more experience.

now why Do you need a year of med surg nursing to do surgical nursing.

I am so tired of you need a year of experience for this or that or anything.

What if you really do not like med surg nursing lol.

I swear I would take a job teaching Emt's or Paramedics for 8 bucks a hour less If it was out there.

I am a new nurse and I'm sick of the nurses eat there young crap already. Nurses wonder why we don't get paid better I can name at least 20 reasons and I've only been a new grad since dec.

yahoo so after I get this magical experience I'll know everything there is to know about nursing right sureeeeeeee right.

Is there something magical about having 7 0r 8 patients that nurses love to say see look what I can do I can handle 12 pts at once. to me thats not a feat it's kind of insane really.

You can only really take care of about 4 people at once all the good nurses know that. in facT I was just reading that if your nurse has 7 pts your chance of dieing in The hospital goes up by 41 per cent.

:nono::uhoh3::cry:

And why would you want more stress? I was talking with a nurse who was like oooo yea I wanna do ICU n this n flight nursing hehehehe thats all well n good but to me I quess After working on a tele floor that just does not seem to be a goal of mine anymore. I love the kind of pt who walks in gets assessed for something treated and gone d/c the same day if possible. I am sure others like seeing the same person day in and day out over and over again. That way you get to know them there family ect ect.. Trust me I can learn enough about my pt in a few hours I quess I like the in and out faster pace type of unit. Some say well that's more like a factory job of nursing and perhaps it is.

sorry for the vent and sorry if I made typing mistakes its late and I am over tired I quess.:typing

do you need a year of med surg nursing to do surgical nursing.

no. you just need to find a hospital that is willing to train or nurses. they are difficult to find, and many have competitive internships, but they do exist. i am in a similar boat as you so i know how exhausting it can be to break into the or

A lot of peoples opinions vary. Some say yeah to med/surg for a year, others say nah, go to ICU. I did progressive care (critical care step-down) for two years before going to SICU. You don't always have to go to med/surg, but I don't suggest starting out in ICU unless there is some type of internship/externship involved.

jess is correct. or is very competitive.

Don't give up or get discouraged. Just keep looking... Someone will hire you..... I am a OR nurse. We hire new grads all the time.. We also hire nurses from other specialties. Also, it depends on the staffing at the time that you apply.. At times my boss will say she isn't going to hire any nurses without OR experience, and then staffing gets low... and guess what,,,, she does.. It also sounds like you may like the ER too from what you have said... So good luck to you and keep us posted:nurse::redbeathe:nurse:
