Surgical/Lab technitions

Here in the US we have a lot of what we call "techs". They're a whole lot like nurses, but they can only work in one field. If a Surgical or a Lab technition wanted to come to the UK, would they have to get their RN degree or do you all have techs too? I've always been curious about that...lol

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

nope we don't have a lot of techs only RNs who specialise in one field. I think only RNs would get a visa to work in the UK :)

Laboratory techs are actually Medical Technologists and have a four year program that they go thru. They are registered in the state that they are working in, just like an RN. They have an exam that they take and can pick their specialty just like nurses do.

I still don't think we have anything like that here, We do have ODA's although the name does vary from hospital to hospital (ODA = operating department assistant) they usually just work in theatres I think it is a 2-3 yr course and they assistant the anaethetist
