I need to know if it is the RN scope of practice to change suprapubic catheters in the state of California.

While very dry reading, it is in the best interest of any licensed individual to be fully aware of practice acts and regulations in the state in which they work. This is a PDF on CA scope of practice. You should also familiarize yourself with the practice acts as well. It's the best way to protect yourself and your license.

We have performed them as a nursing function in the home care setting in California for as long as I can remember, going decades back. With a physician signed POC.
The first change following placement of a new cystostomy is normally performed by the urologist with subsequent changes performed by the LVN/RN. We occasionally see a non licensed family caregivers perform the procedure on a long term basis for the patient.
In the past I changed suprapubic catheters, even feeding tubes but DON where I am working now says it is outside our scope of practice. Our resident has had suprapubic catheter for a long time and I feel like my hands are tied. He will have an unnecessary trip to hospital to and expense as well.
Sounds like a facility policy.
