Hello everyone,
I realize when I had to write my nursing exam how much pressure I experienced about the whole thing. I wrote mine in June 2010 and passed in first attempt but still remember when I walked out the exam, I was not sure what would be the result.
The purpose of this thread is supporting those nursing students who are planning to write their CRNE in upcoming June. Students, please feel free to share your concerns and questions. Nurses please support those students with tips for study.
Just couple of reminders before we get started:
1. Please do not discuss specific questions or any content tested in CRNE.
2. Please read other threads for more information as well. Other threads give you valuable information and be smart and take them into your advantage.
3. Please stay on topic.
4. Please use proper grammar and spelling.
Thank you all.

Good morning CAZZA64 :)
Its morning in this part of the world ,thank you very much for the hint ,the question now whether i have to include in my preparation for the general SCE assessment ,any pediatrics or psychology as i read and correct me if am wrong that i do not need to review maternity and psychology nor pediatrics in the general assessment ,how true is my understanding?
i have got the CRN prep guide and it has those subjects included so am confused :)
NOTE : true that i have nothing to loose when it comes to repeating the SCE assessment(it will only improve my skills) yet financially its going to be a burden specially that i have to travel from here all the way to Canada. but its worth the try for the sake of my two little angels :)

hiya sweet princess, sadly from what i have looked at,there seems to be a fair bit of psychology and paeds, an area i have nooo knowledge or real skills in!!!! its always good practice to just read around these areas, don't get yourself bogged down, as we are not expected to know everything. The CNA book kind of tells you the percentage of where the marks will be from in the 4 sections.
keep the faith thinks of your little beauties and the life you will provide for them x
this whole journey is just one big financial burden, books exam fees plane fir accommodation, its cost me a fortune.I really hope i pass as i don't think i will be able to afford to fly over from the UK again in October to resit.
I just took the SEC (or CCA as they call it in Manitoba) this week so maybe I can clarify a few things for you.
What exams you take depend on what the Nursing College has asked of you specifically. The general assessment includes a 3.5hr multiple choice exam, 3.5hr short answer exam, the OSCEs, Clinical Judgement, and the Triple Jump. This should take you two days total. I had to also take the maternal, child health, and mental health exams and the self-assessment which took me another day and half. If you are not sure from your letter, you can ask when you schedule the date for SEC on the phone. The letter also gives you a few resources including online practice scenarios for the triple jump and clinical judgement. Make sure you do these to help you on the day. I went through the 2005 and 2010 CRNE prep guides and I thought that helped. Also, read the CNA Code of Ethics, Entry level competencies for RNs in your province, Standards of Nursing Practice, and the Canada Health Act. For the general exams, study from nursing textbooks or review books from the past 5 years. There were also some community-based questions, cultural competence questions, and quite a few questions specific to healthcare in Canada. The SEC/CCA is NOT a pass/fail exam, this is to let the province know how you compare to nursing standards in Canada. You will NOT be able to retake the SEC. Once you take it the first time, they will make a decision regarding whether you need to take the bridging program, just certain classes, or if you need to go back to nursing school. I'm from the US, studied for about 3 weeks and I thought the exams were okay (no super hard/complicated questions) but I think some of them were vague and tricky, especially the therapeutic communication responses. Guess I just have to wait for the results now.
There are quite a few threads on this site for the SEC including one from the moderators so read those and hopefully it will help as well. The moderators usually want us to stick to the topic for the thread so people don't get confused (as most people on this thread are preparing for the CRNE itself and not the SEC) so if you have more questions, send me a message or reply to one of those SEC/CCA threads.
Good luck!

The SEC/CCA is off-topic for this thread. I'm going to tie that derailment up and then we'll return to the topic at hand and that is the Canadian Registered Nurse Examination.
SEC, or CCA as it's known in Manitoba, is an assessment of a person's competence at the bedside as it compares to the minimum standards expected of locally-educated, newly-graduated RNs. It looks at critical thinking skills, decision-making, prioritzation, time management and ethics, while indirectly assessing your knowledge base. It is used when it is unclear from your documentation as to whether your educational preparation and experience is adequate to ensure you meet those minimum standards. Therefore it is not required of every IEN who applies for Canadian registration, only those whose documentation isn't adequately clear. There are no retakes. Once the assessment is complete, the College of Registered Nurses and the examining facility examine the results and decide what will be required to bring you to the same level as those newly-graduated local RNs I mentioned. You may need nothing, or you may have such difficulty that they would recommend you return to school and undertake a Canadian nursing degree... and everything in between. In any case, you will not be permitted to write the CRNE until the conditions imposed by your SEC/CCA are met satisfactorily.
Studying for the SEC/CCA should be limited to learning about the health care system in Canada, the Code of Ethics for Registered Nurses and provincial idiosyncracies.
Now let's return to our regularly-scheduled discussion. Any future posts related to SEC/CCA to this thread will be removed.

yes, I passed. There were so many psychosocial based questions. Use mosby as ur guide book to organize your sections. For example: Divide them in GI, Pharm, Neuro etc. and know the symptoms, nursing considerations....Always remember ABC...
