Support group for CRNE June 2011

Published

Hello everyone,

I realize when I had to write my nursing exam how much pressure I experienced about the whole thing. I wrote mine in June 2010 and passed in first attempt but still remember when I walked out the exam, I was not sure what would be the result.

The purpose of this thread is supporting those nursing students who are planning to write their CRNE in upcoming June. Students, please feel free to share your concerns and questions. Nurses please support those students with tips for study.

Just couple of reminders before we get started:

1. Please do not discuss specific questions or any content tested in CRNE.

2. Please read other threads for more information as well. Other threads give you valuable information and be smart and take them into your advantage.

3. Please stay on topic.

4. Please use proper grammar and spelling.

Thank you all.

Where are you from whatshouldido?

I've received my envelope yesterday and it was a fail. I got 111/112. This was my second attempt. The first time I got 110/114 in Feb 2011. I'm losing hope. What should I do? I've signed up for CRNE prep course in Sept. I've started studying already. After all the studying, waiting, disappointments, I'm starting to feel a bit suicidal.

How bitterley disappointing for you, I am so sorry! I don't really know what to say, except, just keep at it, and give one final push. You are so close!!!! The prep course is an excellent idea, and will hopefully just give you that extra bit of knowledge/confidence that you need. As we all know, it is not really always the nursing aspect we fail on,but the way the questions are written. I truly wish you all the best for the future xx

Hello whatshouldido,

I can definitely feel your frustration and sadness. This is just an exam which we are not used to. I too gave the exam this June and I really felt those questions were very vague and subjective. So, even if you failed, I do not really think it defines who you are as a person. You still have one more attempt and try your best to use that opportunity. Do not let those disturbing thoughts fool you. I am sure you are more than that. You still have other options as RPN etc. There are many immigrants were doctors and engineers in their home countries, but never get to practice here even after clearing Canadian exams. So we are very lucky as compare to them. Please use your opportunity properly and I am sure you will pass on your 3rd attempt as you failed by very narrow margin. I will always think of you in my prayer and for all those who failed. Believe in yourself and love yourself. Do not be hard on yourself as you have done your best I am sure.

Don't loose hope!! These exam doesn't measure how caring and great nurse you are. Do you know what kind of challenges you had during the exam or during your study period? Time management maybe? Not a lot of practice questions?

Heres what I did on preparing for the exam: I studied 5-6 weeks before the exam. The first few weeks I spent about 3-4 hours a day reading and doing mock questions like crne then 2-3 weeks before the exam I would spend 8-10 hours a day doing the same thing (but with breaks of course in between). I used all the CNA prep guides from 2nd to 5th edition (if i were you try to check out the public library or universities if they have all the prep guide so you can borrow them now instead of later on). I used the mosby 1st and 2nd edition also the lippincott one. Try to practice a lot of CRNE mock questions and find a study buddy. ALSO, if you are working fulltime/part-time try to get a month of vacation before exam so you will have a lot more time to study and you will be less stress and tired. :):):)

I wish you all the best and I will be praying for you!!:nurse::nurse:

Hi whatshouldido,

My friend just wrote for the third time & passed! She also failed the first two times by only a couple of points. She was a determined woman while preparing for the third try. She took a 2-day prep course which offered a lot of question/answer tips. She was definitely nervous & knew that multiple choice questions were & always have been her biggest challenge. Don't give up, stay positive & perhaps you can find someone like my friend to be your mentor. It can & will happen!!

To whatshouldido,

If i may add, read and analyze the question carefully. Look for the stem, i.e what's being asked in the question; watch out for the key words i.e except, first, never, always...and answer practice questions as many as you can and make notes on those topic you're not familiar with.

Mind you it takes perseverance and determination. I was working full time while reviewing but my mindset was to pass it the first time.

Good luck and Godspeed!!

I can understand your frustration and feeling defeated by the grueling process of preparing, sitting and then waiting for results with this test. You have been so close to passing though so I really think you have a great chance at being successful with your next attempt.

I would say really look at where you think you are having trouble, if you aren't sure where your going wrong maybe someone can help you to figure that out by working with you. Sometimes an outside perspective can see what we don't see ourselves. Do you have the CRNE leaRN CD? If you answer all the questions on that CD it can show you what areas you are weaker in which helps narrow things down. That is one approach.

A course will help, I'm sure. It is good to learn in a variety of way's, hearing, reading, watching, writing notes, doing questions, group study ect. It helps solidify information into memory.

Regarding the psychosocial questions or the more subjective questions that CRNE will ask, I suggest going over the CRNE leaRN text as may time as you need to and study the patterns of how the questions are asked and answered. There are themes. For example, a theme is to always speak directly with a person when having conflict in the work place or always acknowledge the clients concerns/feelings first and suspend judgment in a situation that's asking "how do you respond to this client". I found the more I studied these questions the more confident I felt about picking the right answer on the test, its a sort of conditioning of learning which answer to choose.

In regards to the psychomotor type questions, read the competencies and study all the diseases/situations listed. For example they say a nurse "intervenes in a rapidly changing health situation: trauma (e.g., burns, fractures)". Thus you know intervening and treating trauma, burns and fractures should be on you list of things to study. This will help narrow down what may be asked on the test. Of course not all of the diseases/situations listed in the comp's will be on the exam but it gives you an idea of where to start. Med-surg text's are a good starting point to study from.

Mind set is important too. Reminding yourself you can do it, and that you know your stuff is important in the process. It won't guarantee someone success but it will definitely help. Where as believing you can't do it can only be harmful.

You are so close to passing, I really hope you don't give up now. Believe as much as you can that you will pass the next test, really believe it and envision it. You are so close to doing it already!

Also I hope you are able to talk with someone -out side of this forum- about how you are feeling or that you have ways to deal with the stress you are going through. What you said in your post is a serious matter. I understand the frustration and probably intense emotion you are experiencing over this exam. But please I hope you can pull through and stay positive as much as you can or at least talk with someone to help release some of the stress/burden you may be experiencing. Please do not let this test defeat you:)
