Support group for CRNE June 2011

Published

Hello everyone,

I realize when I had to write my nursing exam how much pressure I experienced about the whole thing. I wrote mine in June 2010 and passed in first attempt but still remember when I walked out the exam, I was not sure what would be the result.

The purpose of this thread is supporting those nursing students who are planning to write their CRNE in upcoming June. Students, please feel free to share your concerns and questions. Nurses please support those students with tips for study.

Just couple of reminders before we get started:

1. Please do not discuss specific questions or any content tested in CRNE.

2. Please read other threads for more information as well. Other threads give you valuable information and be smart and take them into your advantage.

3. Please stay on topic.

4. Please use proper grammar and spelling.

Thank you all.

It's definitely different province to province. In Ontario, your temp licence is taken away if you are unsuccessful. I still have my temp licence, but I also don't have my results yet. I also haven't heard from my manager about not coming to work on Sunday (if I failed, I assume the CNO would let work know as I would not be able to practice without a licence..) so I think that's a good sign.

I am from Mississauga, ONtario. I just received mine and I passed!! I don't have the registration paper though. They only gave me one paper congratulating me for successfully completing it. I have to send them proof of permanent residence since I am an IEN. One paper inside a white envelope. Anyway, I am so happy. Congratulations to all those who passed and for those who didn't goodluck in October, I'll pray for your next exam :p

Thank you so much for the advice...I also heard that you get more done if you answer the exam backwards, eg. Independent questions first...does this make sense, did anyone else hear of this or do this?

I decided to start with the single questions first. This worked fine for me. I felt it was a better way to warm up/get started with the test. It's easier for me to skip one single question if I don't like it and come back to it than to see a larger case study and feel overwhelmed if I don't think I know the answer. Starting with the tougher part of the test for some (i.e. longer case studied) may make someone lose confidence at the start of the test.

I split the test up this way for time management:

830-930: go through single questions answering as many as a I could and staring the ones I wanted to skip

930-1000: go back to the harder q's. I skipped quite a few actually but felt its better to get the ones I know out of the way first, working from easiest to hardest.

1000-1015: take a bathroom break/drink some water, try to stay calm! stretch!

1015-1115: case study questions, skipping ones that will take longer to think through or that I was unsure of.

1115-1145: finish anything I skipped in the case studies.

1145-1230: fill out the scan card and make sure this is done before the test is over! I was done 10 mins before the exam ended and just left after that. But after I left I thought I should have used the last 10 mins but I was nervous about erasing anything on the scan card since I figured the computer could read something wrong if there were too many pencil erasing marks.

I can't say that will help anyone but I thought I'd share one persons approach. It kept me on track so that at each time interval I could check if I'd be able to finish on time. I don't think I got more than 5-10 mins off track and read each question once and gave an answer to each question.

Congratulations!! Now you can celebrate!!

Got my result in the London area today, it's good! A victory for a IEN from the land down under!

To those who did not pass, your life is not over....best of luck in future!

Greetings my friends and fellow colleagues, I am pleased to inform you that I PASSED the June 1, 2011 CRNE! FINNNNNAAAAALLLLLYYYY! I'm still in a state of shock. I celebrated with family and friends yesterday and to be honest, it's one of the best days of my life. I had to keep reading the letter over and over again just in case I misunderstood it. I congratulate those who passed! Those who were not successful, don't fret--it's not over yet! Fight fight fight! I received my good news yesterday morning in a white regular envelop, $0.59, sent on July 12, 2011, with two pieces of paper (letter of congratulations and General Class registration form). I'm an Ontario resident!

I guess I underestimated Canada Post and CNO! They delivered those results just in time! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

I just wanted to thank everyone for their support.

I rcvd mine yesterday and I PASSED! I am in the gta/etobicoke. I cried non-stop for joy after 6 agonizing weeks. Congrats to all who passed and to those who did not, pls don't give up.

I cried too! lol

Lastly, for those who were not successful or will be taking the CRNE in OCT2011/FEB2012, I would like to share some of my studying strategies:

Using the CNA prep guide:

  1. Do the CNA prep guide while timing yourself (~4hrs).
  2. See which questions you got right or wrong. DON'T read the rationals just yet. Tally your score.
  3. Read ALL answers (the correct and wrong ones) of EACH question. I know this is time consuming and it took me 2 days to read all of it thoroughly the first time. I can't stress enough how important it is to understand how the CRNE ask questions.
  4. OPTIONAL: Review with a friend or study buddy EACH question and answers. Sometimes looking at it from a different perspective helps you gain a broader understanding of what the question is asking. Ask questions. Take notes of what you don't understand.
  5. Read the questions and answers AGAIN. This time understand how the question is being asked. Look for patterns between how the question is being asked and the answers (correct and wrong). This should be quicker than the first time you read everything.
  6. Repeat the process until you are comfortable with understanding the questions and answers.

The books I used were the CNA prep guide (my main source), Mosby Comprehensive (barely touched it), Mosby prep guide (helped with timing and content) and my nursing books (Med-surg + Fundamentals... helped with content). IMO, CNA prep guide is best used for understanding *how* the CRNE ask questions. Note: The real CRNE has longer questions than the CNA prep guide but overall they're comparable. CNA prep guide was easier. The other books were good for content.

Tips: Have a study buddy. Always double check your information from one source to another (e.g., Mosby Comprehensive had many mistakes in it. I had to check my Fundamentals and Med-surg for some funky info coming from that book). Practice time management skills by doing mock exams!

Send me a private message if you have any questions. :nurse: :redbeathe :o :clown: :lol2: :D
