Support group for CRNE June 2011

Published

Hello everyone,

I realize when I had to write my nursing exam how much pressure I experienced about the whole thing. I wrote mine in June 2010 and passed in first attempt but still remember when I walked out the exam, I was not sure what would be the result.

The purpose of this thread is supporting those nursing students who are planning to write their CRNE in upcoming June. Students, please feel free to share your concerns and questions. Nurses please support those students with tips for study.

Just couple of reminders before we get started:

1. Please do not discuss specific questions or any content tested in CRNE.

2. Please read other threads for more information as well. Other threads give you valuable information and be smart and take them into your advantage.

3. Please stay on topic.

4. Please use proper grammar and spelling.

Thank you all.

when I left the exam, it was ten minutes to one o'clock and we had until 1pm.. anyway, there was still about a quarter of people finishing up. My friend filled in 5 questions without even looking when the time was up.

Finishing up the exam is as important as getting as many as correct answers. People who failed the exam before usually are those who struggled with time management.

Well, it's too bad some of you had an unpleasant testing experience but hey this becomes part of our job to deal with things and let it go when we have to I guess. Once you start your practice, 99.99% of your patient are happy and appreciate your help. The very small fraction that's left are those who are always unhappy no matter what you do. And that's part of our experiences, right?

Thanks for input guys. Now times to relax and wait but from what I read, you all are going to be just fine.

How many of you were able to finish the exam?

I finished the exam when the one hour announcement was made. I think 4 hours for 200 questions was more than adequate, but I can see how some questions can trip people over. Most of my friends finished at the 3 hour mark.

CRNE was a bit more technical than what I expected, and there were questions where I debated between two choices.

Good luck guys!

What you mean by being technical? Please don't share any specific question here but share in general what you meant by technical.

Did you expect to get more psychosocial questions?

Please read through the beginning of this thread and you'll find the answer to your question. And let us know if we can help further.

Cheers

as far as technical, there were some math questions... the first 100 questions were related to case studies. The last 100 were related to signs and symptoms, nursing priority, lab values, physiology. There were OB questions, ped questions, med surg.. it pretty much covered everything.

And I agree, time management was extremely important.. my friend never started studying till a week before the exam started. Not to say that she doesn't know her "stuff" but cramming doesn't help. I started at the beginning of May, and the reason I feel giving yourself a good month or so, is that by going over as many questions as you can.. you can understand how the questions are set up and see every possible angle that they come at you with. Some questions were just flat out dumb (and I say 'dumb' in the sense that, they were very, very wordy and a few were just ridiculous).

How many of you were able to finish the exam?

Pacing yourself for this exam takes some practice. Since most mc exams are 60 questions in length in uni, 200 is a big jump. If I had had more time before this exam I would have done a few more mock exams just to make sure I had a better sense of time over 200.

I did however finish the exam on time. But what I mean by that is, I did read each question once and gave an answer. I felt rushed though and a bit panicked during the exam because I was worried I wasnt going to finish on time. Because of that I did rush some questions that as soon as I was done the exam, wished I had time to go back and fix. I answered them wrong on the exam but actually knew the right answer when the pressure and anxiety was gone.

You are right. Top of getting sets of mock exams in the nursing schools, I think the content is also different in CRNE (although you always can apply nursing process anywhere). In nursing school we had a mock exam of 150 questions at the end of the fourth year and we were told the CRNE was pretty much look like it. Well no.

I was in the first group writing multiple choices formate last June and we had actually 212 questions for 4 hours. Sure it was a lot of pressure and stress. But while I agree nursing schools should or better do a better preparation for CRNE exams, I think we as new graduate nurses also need to take responsibilities. You hear in this thread and else where that there are students out there who started cramming just a week before the exam. I personally don't think that's ever close to enough but hey if they pass the exam, they are lucky.
