Let them know right off the bat that you are serious about whatever it is your asking them to do. I have posted before that the way I earned the respect and subsequent compliance of my aides was to jump in and help them when I could, even if it puts me behind. I will toilet, feed, help position/transfer, answer lights, and whatever else they need help with. They see I'm not "above" pt care, and have earned their respect for it. When I ask something of them, they are mostly willing to do it. I have also been told that I'm the only nurse that will do those things. (Sadly enough). I also listen to them when they tell me there's a problem with a res and I take them seriously. They have more direct contact with them, therefore would logically be the first to see a change in them. I also have no problem writing someone up for substandard care, and they are also aware of that. I prefer to teach first, and give a verbal warning. If they make the same error again, here's your write-up! I have been a nurse for almost a year now, and have only gone to that extreme a couple of times. They know I mean business. It was hard at first, as I could barely get them to acknowledge my existence. With diligence, I earned their respect as I proved I respect them as well. Good luck and congrats on passing NCLEX!

bluegeegoo2 hit the nail on the head.I did the same thing and have been a nurse for a long time.My CNA'S respect me because I help them and rely on them for changes in my patients. They say a lot that I am the only one that has done anything about that .I told a nurse days ago about that.Makes me angry and sad that I was the only one that cared enough to call the doc or whatever.I have also not had to write up anyone until about 1 year ago in my career. You reach a point in your career where you have had enough of the young whipper snappers trying to get away with stuff and talk to you with much disrespect that you write them up and make a copy for yourself because you will get some superiors that circular file things and do nothing so you have the write up when you need to go up the chain of command.
