SUNY BUFFALO ABS May 2014

Nursing Students Post Graduate

I'm looking for others applying to the UB ABS nursing program for this coming May. Past classes have helped each other out and kept each other updated on important information and I'd like to get that going for the May 14 hopefuls!

Hi nycnursetobe2014- I am 36 and have pretty much lived in Buffalo my whole life, except for about 4 years out of state for my BA. I am a huge Buffalo fan, and honestly think there is a wealth of things to do, good food, culture, night life, etc. I think you'll be surprised- Buffalo gets a bad rep but it's a great little city. I live in the Elmwood Village neighborhood and my husband and I bike and walk all over. It's my favorite neighborhood in Buffalo and one of the cultural centers. Rent is pretty cheap too! You can get a 3 bedroom flat in the area for $600-900 easily.

You'll find stuff to do- I promise! :D

The estimated price for the 12 month program at UB, with books and materials, fees, etc. factored in was about $18,000 I believe. There was an info sheet with the figures at one of the information sessions- I can't remember exact numbers, but $18,000 is ballpark.

I'm in!!! I can't believe it!! AAAHHHH!

Thanks scanders!! And whoah... this 3 bedroom for $600-$900..is that per bedroom??! lol. That's amazing! Someone should make a facebook group for all of us to connect!

I'm 37, soon to be 38..yikes! I'm from Buffalo too, but have lived in CA, TX and in Europe as well. I didn't mind coming back, I always had fun here although I have 2 babies so I don't get out much anymore. There's things to do and the people are awesome but I'm biased..;)

Nycnursetobe, it's definitely not NYC, but there are a lot of things to do here! I'm 24 and still enjoying the nightlife (though not for long..I'm sure we're going to be crazy busy once the program starts!) Buffalo has a lot of culture- there are a ton of festivals to celebrate the different heritages here. Little areas within Buffalo are also about different ways of life. Huge fan of the Elmwood village and Allentown. Free/cheap concerts in the area during the summer. Amazing food. The bars are open until 4AM. Friendly people overall. I was a little turned off by Rochester because I feel like it just doesn't have the same personality that Buffalo has. We get a bad rep in the media, but I really think it's a great place to be. There are worse places.

Etnursing, I'm not positive about specific numbers because the last time I looked into it was probably three years ago. In my mind, though, I was looking at $20k for UB vs $60k for UR, plus the cost of living. UR is pretty generous with scholarship money though.

Thanks everyone for the advice! I am so excited! If someone makes a Facebook group I'll have to re activate my Facebook !

I got in!!!! I am also from Buffalo. It seems like there are a lot of locals in the program. NYC, you will pay more for rent in the Elmwood Village/Allentown area. I pay $650 for a two bedroom in Allentown. I could get a two bedroom in the suburb of Kenmore, right on the Buffalo boarder, with a dining room and a yard for about the same price. Elmwood is a bit pricier than Allentown but still very affordable. Allentown is nice because it is closest to Buffalo General Hospital on Main St., where we may be having clinicals. Children's Hospital is right in EV but will be moving to Main St. next to BGH and the new UB school of medicine.

Hope this helps!

I'm about an hour way so I'm from the area too! I'm 21 is anyone else coming straight out of undergrad?

Hey etnursing, i am also 21 graduating in spring 2014 from my first undergrad

Oh good! I just graduated this past Saturday!

That definitely helps. Thanks!! $650 is crazy to me hahah. Right now I live with three other roommates (so 4 of us total plus a large dog) in a small 3 bedroom apartment in an 'up and coming' neighborhood in Brooklyn and we pay $2850 for it not including any utilities. Sooooo. $650 for a TWO bedroom in a cool area??! I'm good with that. lol. I do have a large dog that will be coming with me.. I'm thinking that might be my main problem finding a place. But I guess I'll figure that out when the time comes!
