  1. Pink, that is exactly what I was thinking of doing! Makes me feel better to know you had three same idea and its working for you! Epi, ABSN mean accelerated, it's a nursing program for those who have a ba chelors degree in anothet field so it is a condensed, fast paced program. I start Monday and will graduate May of next year! ! How long are your programs?
  2. Great advice, thanks! ABS is tough! !
  3. Hello, Just wondering, do you all think it's necessary to read every chapter or is skimming enough? I am thinking of doing down with the lecture notes and just adding whatever is left out that seems most important from the book. Good idea?
  4. I am starting this year's program in May 12th...let me know if you have any questions about the app processes ect. I'd be happy to help.
  5. Interesting info, thank you. I will do some more digging and find out how things work at the hospital I'm interested in doing the preceptorship at.
  6. Hi all, I am very lucky to have the opportunity to choose which hospital and specialty I want to experience a 3 week preceptorship at during my final semester of nursing school next spring where you are paired with a nurse and follow her schedule. It is pretty much like a long job interview with a chance to impress and receive a job offer. I know I have lots of time to decide but I am very interested in OR nursing. I know it is a different animal altogether. The issue is I have been hearing from last year's students that even with the preceptorship it is difficult to get hired as a new grad in the OR. This makes me feel like choosing the OR experience would end up being a wasted opportunity. What do you all think? Should I go for it anyway or pick another specialty that I have a good chance of getting hired for? Thanks in advance.
  7. Aspiring nurse here too.... what option are there besides floor nursing for new grads that still pay well? 14 bucks at a doctors office won't pay my loans. I will have my BSN... does it really make a difference?
  8. I signed up on the website to receive an email alert when the application becomes available. Do you all have experience with underserved populations? I'm trying to get some now.
  9. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION! New grads here in Buffalo, NY are given a chance more so than in other places. I have a good chance of getting a new grad position with a BSN at one of the local hospitals who are only hiring BSN's because they are trying to achieve magnet status. Some hospitals hire ADN's too. I know some one who just got hired at ECMC with an ADN, only took 4 months. Nobody wants to live here so heck, I was born here, I'll take a job here, gain some experience then move if I want. And they start us around $28-30 an hour!
  10. We do clinicals at several area hospitals. We were told the last four weeks of clinical are like a long job interview. We are put on the schedule at one of the hospitals and while it is still just a part of schooling we have a chance to show what we've learned and impress with our skills. If they like us we might be offered a position but nothing is guaranteed. Hope this helps.
  11. P.S. there are prerequisites bit you can take then at a community collage pretty inexpensively. Plus the area hospitals have new grad residency programs. I think three job market here for nurses is better than most other places. The cost of living is low as well and I've been hearing $28-30 an hour starting pay!!
  12. Are you a NY State resident? If so you should consider moving up state to Buffalo. The University at Buffalo has an ABSN and traditional nursing program. It is a public university with very reasonable cost of attendance. I got accepted to the ABSN program and am starting in May if you have any other question s.I don't know how to copy and paste from my phone but Google UB spring 2014 tuition to get an idea. Tuition and fees are $7,989 a YEAR!! Not bad compared to other schools. So if you did e traditional and you already have a bachelors t would cost around $16,000. The ABSN is a bit more at $20,000 because you pay more over summer.
  13. Yes it looks like classes are held Mondays at 6 or Saturday mornings at 9. Classes resume Saturday the 4th. I would prefer a Saturday morning class so I'm looking at the 4th, 11th, 18th or 25th because the semester starts the 27th.
  14. No prob scanders! Jennah; congrats! From what I have been hearing WNY is a bit more grad friendly than other places. My chiropractor's sister in law and friend both found new grad RN positions recently one in Buffalo and the other in Rochester.
  15. Yeah it made me feel less anxious when I found that out. Is anybody planning on taking their BLS soon? I would like to do mine sometime in the next few weeks before the semester starts cause then I'll be busy with pharm. I thought it would be nice to take it with someone from the program.
