Hello Everyone,
I am preparing myself to apply for Summer 2018 pacesetter BSN program. We can use this forum for Summer 2018 applicants. I am in the process of taking Hesi exam. I have completed all my prerequisite courses needed for the program.
Little bit about me:
BS in Microbiology in 2005 -GPA (3.05)
MPH degree in Epidemiology in 2012-GPA (3.85)
Associate degree of Science in 2017-GPA (4.0)
Hesi test-will be taking it in August
Working full time with City Health department as an epidemiologist specialist since last five years. I am also a mom of two boys.
Got accepted to MUSC college of nursing program but declined it. Also got accepted to Johns Hopkins Entry into Masters of nursing program for Fall 2017 but had to deffer it to Fall 2018 due to financial circumstances.
Trying to apply for the in-state school due to affordable tuition as well as easy commute.
I really hope i can get into UT Health Science center pacesetter program as it's my first option as it's closest to me as well as it's affordable and one of the best programs in Texas.
My second denial here. 3.6 overall, 3.7 science 92 HESI- former Navy Corpsman FMF with loads of experience. To say I'm a little disappointed is an understatement. I haven't received an eval either time. There are 2 classes that I am retaking to improve my GPA, and maybe that is a factor, but seriously, I can't imagine not letting an operational corpsman in, but I am trying to stay positive. I just retook the HESI and got 96 overall now, so I will stay positive that with that and my retook classes it will improve my chances. I will apply one more stinking time here, but I will be applying to a few more as well. I'm even thinking about just trying for an ADN program even though I have all of my pre-reqs done for BSN. Whatever it takes.
I'm so sorry! I thought you were a shoe in the door when I originally read your stats. The process is extremely confusing That is an amazing HESI score and you should definitely keep trying. Fall is just around the corner!
Goodluck!
I think the same thing @mzmissy! It's possible none of us here are part of the second wave. If you got waitlisted, then they are done with acceptances for sure. The lack of transparency is frustrating though. It's understandable that because they have such a large applicant pool they have to be creative. I have heard that they start out with more 4.0's than they have spots for, but they maybe take 20 of them. I think perhaps diversity, as was mentioned here and consistency in school/work might be something they look for. For all we know they may even check facebook for drunken photos...lol...just kidding. (I didn't get in, but I don't have any of those) I've also heard that they want people who are going to stay in the Houston area after graduation, (how would they even know that) but again, all of these things are just rumors floating around.
If you go by what is posted even just on this forum, they have given us bad information several times when people have called. I think they just say whatever they think will discourage people from calling again. That's what we do in pharmacy when people bug us. We just try to get them off the phone as quickly and politely as possible and leave no loose ends. Sad, but we are just so swamped all of the time. I'm sure they feel the same way with 800-1200 applicants every four months. If even a small percentage of those applicants called each day, they'd get nothing done!
I think the most important thing to take away from this is not to get discouraged by test scores/gpa at all. They take such a wide range, that stats (as long as they're a B on the hesi or higher and a GPA of at least 3.5 (?) or greater) and you stand just as great of a chance as someone with perfect scores. So don't ever be discouraged from applying by scores or the other stats that people post!
You know, I was wondering if retaking science classes would raise any red flags. We often see students who did not get acceptance to the program while having pretty high GPA and HESI scores. However, are any of these students have retaken A&P or any other prerequisite? May be that has nothing to do with how they select candidates, but I feel like an institution like UT Health would have a systematic way of selecting candidates.

I'm so sorry, don't get discouraged! I work for the VA and I LOVE my veterans! My sis is getting ready to deploy Iraq this summer. We are praying it goes as uneventful as the Afghanistan deployment. I feel the same way about LVNs. Doesn't make sense that we are ever denied when we are already nurses, lol. Don't let it bring you down. You are more than a conquerer and God will see it through for your/my good.

I have thought about this as well. I would say it probably doesn't look good retaking some classes. But if they were taken years ago and you may not have been as focused or life happened, it shouldn't be held against you. This is where personal statements come into play, but again, with 600-1200 applicants, they would never be able to read them all.

I am so sorry! I know exactly how you feel! Your stats are excellent! I didn't even get waitlisted, either. I am headed to an ADN even though I have all of my pre-reqs as well.
