One of the first things I do each morning is check the email from the secretary listing which teachers are out and who is subbing in their class. When there is a PD day, I die a little. Cause I know many teachers will be out and I will see the FF kids in each class for s/s "silly stuff". (Notice how I used the word stuff, instead of the word I use in my head). Anyhoo, sometimes I have to pick up the phone and tell the sub, just STOP. Especially with the sending them in three's. O.M.G.

However...If I call a teacher and ask for more information it's usually because I have no objective symptoms on a kid who's milking it for all it's worth. I want to know more about their usual demeanor before I send them home. A wan little thing with no energy may pop a fever in 2-4 hours...or they may be just fine in the same time frame. teachers know the kids, dish!
I do honestly want to do what's best for each child.
Definitely worth it to phone the teacher! Usually if I see a kid who I've never seen in my office before but recognize their name from health records & they're saying they feel terribly sick I'll send them home. If a kid hasn't complained in 3 years and now feels sick then they probably are actually sick. It's also hard to gage if they're "acting themselves" (usually the little ones) if I don't know their normal behavior. Now if a kid I see twice a week tells me they have to go home they better have an excluding symptom.
