Studying CPNE In WA State

Published

Hi there,

I am all done with my NC tests and pre req's. I am so happy!!! Is there anyone in Washington state who is studying for the CPNE? It would be fun to chat or talk with you. I plan on taking my CPNE in Az. Has anyone tested there?

Hi,

I too am doing the excelsior program wondering if you are a LPN or CMA or what is your title? Could you tell me the steps you will be taking to be able to get your license in WA? I am a CMA and it seems I might have a hard time and I am going to have to jump through several hoop, can you shine any light on this issue for me?

I am planning to finish my NC exams in July, then take CPNE ASAP thereafter. I will be working as a camp nurse in CA for the summer. I actually live in Portland, OR, but I work in Washington State when I'm not traveling. I will prob take boards here in OR to avoid the 200 hr preceptorship requirement, although I understand that most hospitals will arrange this without problems. PM me if you'd like to study sometime.

SN 3135, you should call the board of nursing and ask them. I was under the impression that only LPNs were eligible to test in WA. They will be able to tell you for sure.

Hi there,

I am a LPN....but I decided to take a break from the program till maybe Fall. I am in no big hurry to do the CPNE. I currently am not working in the Nursing field.

You are correct that only LPN can test in WA there is a way around their laws, and I am trying to find out exact what that is and how it is done. I am also looking for any CMA's from WA that have gone through Excelsior , maybe they could give me some pointers. I work with a RN that when throug excelsior many years ago before they agreed to let LPN test she said something about taking the NCLEX and the boards in another state and then working there for 200 hours and then I could transfer to WA but I am not sure that is correct. I have just started I have just got done with NC 1 and I am starting to do NC 2 but I don't know where to take the exam in WA or how to contact anyone. I need to take the test during the week if I can but don't know if that is possible. Where do/did you take the exams? I am far behind you but it would be nice to get together and support each other. email me with your address and if you have instant message we could chat now and then also. I did call the board but they weren't very supportive. I am still going ahead, I am hoping by the time I done with the NC1-7 and ready to do the cpne there will have been some changes in WA.

Hi. I'm a long ways off from the CPNE since I just signed up with College Network last month and I'm still waiting for all my study guides to arrive. However, I live in Vancouver, Washington and I am an LPN. I would love to know more about your experience and of course..... as you prepare for the CPNE and finally get thru that, I would be very appreciative of any help you can offer in that area! LOL! I work with another LPN here who is also going through the program but she just signed up about 2 weeks before I did so we still have a long ways to go.

Hope to hear from you soon and good luck with the CPNE!!!!

I'm trying to figure the license requirement myself. I was dropped two wks shy of the LPN completion...close enough that I understand with the hours I could sit the NCLEX-PN in CA at they allow for clinical hours. From all I read on the BON site for WA, I think they require confirmation of completion of certified school....LPN for LPN license, but looks like RN for RN license. From this, I think after completion of Excelsior, you can take NCLEX-RN in different state and with this and Excelsior comfirming RN graduation, you can transfer to WA.

But while this looks good on paper, I still wonder. IF this is true, it would mean that CNA's with five years experience could sit the NCLEX-PN in CA and then get their LVN there. While this is worthless in any other state, it would allow them to then enroll in Excelsior, take the NCLEX-RN and then go anywhere....without any clinical supervision outside of OJT. I would think there woud be some rule on the part of the BON to prevent this from happening.

hi, fellow excelsior nurses and wa residents. i may be able to help you avoid some grief. that's why i am interjecting here...

i was a wa lpn first and graduated from excelsior nov 2006, passed the nclex -rn for hawaii (loooooooong story) in dec 2006 (with no special requirements) then endorsed my hi rn license to alaska (no problems) in jan 2007. i didn't get licensed as an rn in wa until may 2007. the wa board of nursing lost my application, gave me incorrect info about endorsing my rn license from other states which did not have the preceptor requirement... basically gave me the run around and screwed me over for 7 months straight, to be blunt. so. i have a lot of experience with the board and with excelsior issues and want to avoid letting them run you around too. if you want to call me or email me for more info or if this is all too confusing for ya, just send me a pm and i'll give you my phone # and email!there are links below to my previous posts about my ridiculous experience getting my rn license in wa through excelsior.

best wishes! if you don't want further info from me or whatever, just keep in mind... the info the wa boarnd of nursing may be giving you might not be true... test the verbal info they give you as "licensing requirements" against the actual application for rn licensure and see if my advise (below) doesn't hold water. what they want you to do and what they can legally require you to do all depends on what's written specifically in the law.

washington and exclesior preceptorship

excelsior students beware, apparently even inquiring directly to your bon is not a sure fire way to figure out the hurdles of earning an excelsior education.

washington excelsior students. the bon will tell you that you are required to do a 250 hour preceptorship (which they will tell you they don't care if it is paid or not, but seriously, who is going to pay you to be an rn when you haven't been allowed by the bon to take the boards -catch 22). you do not have to do this. you must simply apply for the nclex for another state and simply endorse your rn license from that state to wa afterward. no preceptorship, no proving you have worked as a nurse in that state for 250 hours. nothing. just pay the fees and be done with it. best wishes to you all, may you learn from my apparently unorthodox way of getting through the (imaginary) hurdles.

of course, i would recommend contact the board of nursing directly as they may give you a different story from what i have shared. apparently, it depends on with whom you speak. their phone # is 360.236.4706.

anyone else do this?

Some hospitals will hire LPN-RN and pay, if they are waiting to take the boards/tests.....

sorry things were so flusterating for ya!
