Study groups?I dont know how

Published

Greetings all, I begin NS on

Aug. 25th. At our orientation back in June, the NS director said they encourage us to study in study groups. I know what a study group is, but I have always studied by myself. I usually do little gestures and say certain things to help me study and I really do not know how to participate in study groups. Does anyone else feel the same? Will anyone offer some advice?:heartbeat:nurse::heartbeat

Technically speaking, here's why study groups should work better than studying alone. In most cases, studying alone requires you to simply memorize the concepts. Studying with a group requires you to not only learn it, but to apply it.

If you aren't familiar with it, look up Blooms Taxonomy. One of the highest levels of thinking is synthesizing information, so if you were to ask a question of one of your classmates that includes classic symptoms of a particular disorder, then you would be synthesizing the information (making something new out of what you have learned) and you're more likely to remember it long term.

The study group will be most effective if you study alone to get the "knowledge" foundation and then move on to application by answering some NCLEX type questions/ explaining a concept to a classmate and you can make up a test question to synthesize the info. as I stated above.

If you are able to Justify an answer (tell someone else the WHY of why your answer is the best answer to the question, then you ROCK!!!! You have reached the highest level of Bloom's!!!

Good luck!:D
