I am doing a care plan on an asthma patient that is 8 years old. One of my nursing diagnoses needs to be a altered or (potential for) growth and development. I am not sure how to relate this to my patient??

Can anyone help me??

Hi!

I may suggest... Risk of altered growth development r/a activity intolerance..

Good Luck!

An aquaintance of mine her son has asthma and he has been limited in the sports he can play and she is cautious about him being outside very long in summer heat and winter cold. He feels limited by not being able to spend as much time outdoors sledding in the snow etc.

Thank-you sometimes I am trying too hard to come up with the nursing diagnosis. So basically this will be similiar to a knowledge deficent, and have to enforce and teach in my interventions.

any diagnosis has to be based on your assessment of the patient. every nursing diagnosis has a definition, defining characteristics (signs and symptoms) and related factors (causes). this is no different from medical diagnoses except nursing diagnoses are about nursing problems. there are 3 growth and development diagnoses that might be used here depending on your patient's situation:

  • delayed growth and development (an actual problem)
  • risk for disproportionate growth (a potential problem)
  • risk for delayed development (a potential problem)

review the normal developmental milestones for an 8 year old including where they fall on erickson's developmental stages and if they meet those milestones and behavioral standards. that will tell you if they are delayed (an actual problem). their situation (ex: having a chronic illness, being in a physically abusive situation, being mentally retarded, having a chronic illness [such as cystic fibrosis or sickle cell anemia], prematurity, malnutrition, congenital disorders, multiple or long hospitalizations for medical treatments, etc.) can put them at risk for either the disproportionate growth or delayed development.

you will find links to websites that have information about the growth milestones on this thread in the pediatrics section if you do not have this information in your textbooks: https://allnurses.com/nursing-student-assistance/medical-disease-information-258109.html - medical disease information/treatment/procedures/test reference websites
