Hi everyone,
I would like some comments on student nursing associations. Worth investing some time in? Pros/Cons, whatever info you have would be great.
Thanks,
Boat

HI boat,
yes, SNA's are worth your time! I am president of my school SNA and I'm also the state board community health chair. I have been able to experience many wonderful opportunities and meet some great people from across the state of MI. I hope you look into joining and plan on coming to the Michigan Student Nurses Association state convention in FEB. it's at the hyatt in detroit! Check it out at http://www.minurses.org/mnsa !
hope to see you there,
krista
Thank you,
I see you mentioned the difference between local school chapters and state/national chapters. I'm currently at Schoolcraft and they don't have any affiliation or representative right now. Is it still possible to join if my school isn't recognized?
Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question, and have a good night.
Boat,
You could easily start a chapter at your school. It would be great if Schoolcraft had a chapter! If you want, you can contact our state membership chair...she can walk you through starting a chapter at your school!

best of luck to you!
You may also still come to the convention...even if your are not a member!
To clarify, I can participate if my school doesn't have a chapter or I need to start one to be active?
Thanks for all of your info, very helpful!

My personal opinion (just one person's opinion so don't get mad at me) is it's a lot like student government in high school. Good intentions but a lot of blather with not much substance. Raise a little money for charity which is nice. Listen to some speakers and interact with some nurses in the field, but you can be better served gaining that experience by working in a hospital as a CNA or PCT.
But try it out, you might like it.
John,
You are right, both experiences are totally different...that is why I have a job at two different hospitals as a tech and also participate in SNA. I enjoy raising money and volunteering at local events as well as attending the nurses march and writing resolutions that impact nursing. I enjoy the well rounded experience, as I enjoy everything about nurisng. I feel both experiences are important and enjoyable! I do understand that not everyone has the time to do both, but you can participate in your SNA as much or little as you like.
You can go to the convention in Feb. without being a member, however, I don't believe you can join NSNA without your school being a constituent...get a hold of Renee to find out for sure!
Best of luck,
Krista

I think it would look good on your resume. I was a delegate for my class and feel is shows leadership qualities that employers look for.

Absolutely! One of my NS instructors wrote a letter of recommendation for me and wrote, "has been extremely active in the Association of Nursing Students and has initiated and organized many charitable endeavors including assistance to Katrina victims and shelters for domestic abuse victims. I am pleased to say that any agency hiring her will greatly benefit from her abilities."
Just as extracurricular activities in HS look good on college applications, so do they look good on applications for employment.
