Student Nurses

I've had students twice, I've precepted 2 people and I've been charge nurse at least a dozen times so far. Either no one else wanted a student and you got stuck with them or they saw something in you to where they thought you could handle it.

I'm just amazed that they let students do suture removal. That would never have flown here.

I have taken many students with me. I graduated last May. Whenever a student asks me a question, I try to answer it, but when I have to ask someone else, I always stress to the student to ask someone if you aren't sure. There is nothing wrong with asking questions. It's the ones who don't ask who get into trouble.

This is off subject, but when I was a nursing student, in my beginning of second year, I did suture removal and staple removal. It was on an infected wound too, it was cool.

I precepted nursing students; in fact, I did it for a few BSN students and I am an LPN. At times, there is either no one else available or others don't want to be bothered. I do take the time to answer their questions, because last year, this time, I felt the same way. Some of them are not realistic, though, and I try to be as truthful as possible when I tell them there is a difference between textbook world and real world.

I've had students several times, too. The first one was right after I got off orientation. I've asked the instructors not to do this, but it seems I have no choice. I don't feel ready to take students & I feel like my lack of experience & knowledge is unfair to the students...they don't get the teaching they need.

I love having a student with me. I think I can relate to them as I was in thier shoes only a year ago. I had one with me a week ago and she was assigned to only one of my patients who really didn't have much going on or much for her to do. So I asked her instructor if it would be ok for her to do some dressing chages on 2 other of my patients. When the day was over the student thanked me for giving her some opportunities to do "nursing" things. And I was also able to teach her some things, it was cool! I will be precepting someone in a month, at first I was against the idea. I was like I am still asking questions and I just graduated last May. But then I was talking to another nurse who has been an RN for 20 years and she said that people like me are the best to precept because for one we haven't forgetten yet what it feels like to be a new grad and we can explain things in a simple manner vs someone who has been doing it for years is probably thinking a little more in depth. Plus she reminded that she still asks questions:)
