Hi, I am currently a junior nursing student who is starting to look into summer extern/internships for the summer before my senior year. Does anyone know of any programs in the chicagoland or quad city area? Any help would be awesome!

In Chicago, check out Northwestern Memorial, RIC, and Advocate Christ in Oak Lawn. There's very few such programs around nowadays - many of them bit the dust in the recent economic downturn when hospitals started trimming budgets.

Christ still takes 50 externs a summer as far as I know.

I noticed Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in Chicago had a bunch of part-time student nurse extern positions posted. I had never heard of Mercy until I started applying to nursing jobs in March, but according to Health Grades it seems half decent. I just looked at the website and they are no longer posted, but I would check back periodically or call them and ask about it. Good luck!

One of my prof sent an email with the flyer from christ, idk how she received it.
but basically you will need 2 letters of recommendation, transcript that shows u have a 3.0 gpa, a cover letter & resume statin the 3 areas you r interested in...this is all due by feb 11

Thanks soo much for replying!! I will call christ on tuesday and get some more info! Do you know if you have to have a certain number of semesters of clinical experience, like is there a minimum of 1, 2, etc.?
They didn't specify but i'm sure you need to be heading into your senior yr as a nursing student with two clinical rotations done by the start of the program. I think thats with the majority of the externships

I am pretty sure you need to be in a BSN program as well!
My instructors were giving out the flyers in class last week and it did specify you needed to be graduating in december 2011 or may 2012. Hth!
ChloBear..
How did you search the Mercy positions? I went to the website & theres a drop-down menu, but I don't ever see extern positions.
